Crap, I have Nothing to Post!

clock man Crap, I have Nothing to Post! What Not to Expect

If you’re expecting to read another “Where to Get Ideas From When You Have Blogger’s Block” type of post, then I’m sorry to disappoint you.

For some reason, I thought the 8,997,624 posts already written about that would have done the trick. But if you’re desperate, and the usual tips like driving alone, relaxing or connecting with nature haven’t helped, then Danny Brown has some of the best 25 resources for you.

A Peek at My Drafts

I have 60 plus unfinished posts and ideas sitting in my Drafts folder right now! Ridiculous, I know – but what can I say?

In all honesty, about half will get tossed in the trash. Not because the ideas suck or that they’re poorly written – Nope!

But because:

  • There’s one that announces the arrival of the iPad – damn it I just spoiled the surprise for you!
  • Another about Thanksgiving – maybe I can make it so it sounds Christmasy.
  • One about Tweeb – the brand new Twitter Analytics App for the iPhone – Uhh…brand new back in January!
  • Five that just have a title and nothing else – as if I’m gonna’ remember what my brilliant thoughts were at the time.
  • And 50 something others where I simply got lazy or wanted to publish something else first.

Dashboard Posts Crap, I have Nothing to Post!

And here I am, once again, writing about something other than what I already started days, weeks, or months ago.

But I guarantee you, that I will finish and publish the one’s that are worth my time and yours!

It’s Not the End of the World

kids shocked Crap, I have Nothing to Post!

Have you ever not had a post ready and all of a sudden started panicking about what to do next cause you’re on a tight posting schedule?

Luckily, I don’t have a schedule – of any kind for that matter. Although, every one and their mother says I should and they’re right! But that’s what New Year Resolutions are for – so I’ll be working more on that in 2011 :).

In all honesty though, do you even know or remember what blogs publish at what time or on what days?

Let’s say it’s Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Friday’s at noon. Would you not come back at 5 pm? Would you not come back on Friday if they didn’t have anything for you Wednesday? Of course you would! You might be a little disappointed but I’m sure you’ll sleep just fine.

If you have a schedule – which I highly recommend that you do (reminder to self) – then do your damn hardest to abide by it. Consistency is good and your readers rely on you. But if you miss a time or day here and there, don’t sweat it.

If you’re not a problogger or a behemoth blogging empire, then probability is that people won’t remember your publishing days anyways. I certainly don’t. And if I do, they’ll occasionally slip my mind.

In the grand scheme of things, it’s not the end of the world nor the death of your blog. Your readers aren’t going to forget you, your business won’t crash, your reputation won’t go to hell, your husband will still love you and your cat will continue to curl up next to you when you type.

Just don’t make a habit of it – is all I’m saying.

Life sometimes gets in the way, but if you’re passionate about your blog and are dedicated enough, then you’ll make the time. You wont stray too far from your self-imposed schedule. You’ll write the next great post with killer content.

Why?

  • Because it’s important to you
  • Because it’s a priority
  • Because you love what you do
  • Because you care
  • Because you’re disciplined

I went on vacation earlier this month and didn’t publish anything for a week except for one of my (in)famous SuperPost Sunday’s. But I managed to keep tweeting, commenting and engaging – just less regularly.

And what do you know? My readers were still here when I came back. Thank you kindly – I appreciate every single one of You :)!

Frequency

What I do notice however, is frequency.

I know that ProBlogger publishes at least one post a day, much like Famous Bloggers and Social Media Examiner.

I know that Danny Brown has at least 4 a week and that Tristan Higbee is like the R2 D2 of blogging.

I know that Mashable will bombard you with 20 or more and that the occasional one from ViperChill and the scientific mind of Dan Zarrella, are well worth the wait.

If Mashable was to go a day or two without publishing, then I’d worry that they’ve been hacked or that Petey took everyone on a 2 day beauty spa spree. But I’d keep coming back.

If Dan, hasn’t published in a week, I know whatever analysis he’s preparing is bound to be insightful.

And if Darren Rowse or Brian Clark go MIA for a few days, then who cares? Whatever they spurt out is like hitting the jackpot anyways. People will continue to wait for the golden pennies to roll.

But again, that’s my opinion and mine alone.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not telling you to slack off and ignore your blog for weeks on end. Hell no! I’m just telling you to relax and breathe if you miss a scheduled posting.

People are more forgiving than you think and they will return as long as you give them good reasons to.

So what do I do if I have nothing to post?

Well, I just did!

Now it’s your turn!

Do you have a posting schedule? What do you do if you’re late in publishing? Any other thoughts you’d like to share?

This was the Seinfeld of blog posts!! It was about nothing, and yet so much. and we could all relate to it. I have lists of ideas and lists of drafts that will never see the light of day.
By the way, I’m the “new girl” over at Spin Sucks. : ) Hi.

      Hey Lisa and welcome!
And by the way – I know exactly who you are lol 😉 and it’s great to have you here. I’m kinda like a fan of that fabulous Aunt Gini haha.

I gotta tell ya – I love what you said there – “the Seinfeld of blog posts” HA! Big smile on my face right now.

I think it’s like you said – many people can relate – let’s face it – not every one of our ideas is revolutionary to the point where it must be published. Believe it or not – I’ve added about 10 or so new drafts since I published this piece here – Oh well…

Hope you’re happy over at Spin Sucks and that JB is keeping things in order ;).

Hey – I found your blog via live-your-love.com :) I agree, people are unlikely to notice if we break our routine. Scheduling is something I find useful as a writer, as I can write my posts at the weekend and queue them up so they go out through the week. But the fact is, most people don’t routinely check my newest blogs anyway – though they do drop by if I tweet a link. I guess I do have a lot of blogs so I do have to remind people when there’s a post on one of them …

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      HI Ben and welcome :).

I’ll make sure to thank Brankica for sending you my way :). Speaking of her, she’s doing a hell of a job over at Live Your Love – some highly informative posts – all well worth the read.

I’m glad you stopped by to share your 2 cents as it allowed me to discover your own blog. And I like what I see so far :)!

I think that unless you’re an avid reader of a particular blog and you’ve got their posting schedul memorized than you might not notice if they’re on time or not. Again, I’m mostly referring to personal blogs and not the gigantic ones that post 30 articles a day.

I too think that scheduling is useful and pushes us to be more disciplined – but alas…I haven’t set my posting dates in stone. Except for my SuperPost Sunday’s and a new bi-weekly series that I will be starting soon, I pretty much publish when I have something to say – something that I think will interest or bring value to my readers.

Your method is one that works for many – good for you!

I too often rely on Twitter or my loyal readers to come by and check my latest piece. But remaining consistent and posting frequently are two things that are important (for all the obvious reasons).

I just followed you on Twitter and I look forward to reading your content.

Thanks again for stopping by. Hope to see you around these parts more often.

      Cheers

  • http://www.slymarketing.com Jens P. Berget

I have a posting schedule, but that’s all thanks to Tristan Higbee. He told me about his schedule; monday, wednesday and friday and I thought, why not? So, now I got one and I feel a lot better about blogging.

I don’t feel that I have to publish, but usually I write my blog posts during the weekend (I just finished writing the three for next week). So it’s no problem really. On the other hand, my blog is more like a hobby and I publish my personal opinion, and who cares if I’m late, I certainly don’t :)

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hi Jens,

Hope you had a lovely Christmas.

Tristan is a fantastic example to use and follow. Like I mentioned in my post – he is like a blogging machine and he does an incredible job at publishing consistently and on time.

There are quite a few that like the MWF method and I can see why. Those days seem to obtain great results in terms of visibility/traffic plus they even the week out. If I were to start publishing on certain days – I think this would be the system I would use.

Many of us bloggers blog as a hobby and share our personal opinions. But at some point (hopefully), people will start to appreciate and take into consideration your opinion – especially if you see to know what you’re talking about or if you’re reviewing a product you use. I certainly look to others to see what they have to say about something. I may like it or not – may follow their advice or not – but having it – is certainly interesting to know – at least for me.

For example: your latest post about Feedburner – your insight was helpful to me and the alternatives you suggested are things that I will eventually look into – thank you. So in this case – your opinion lead me to consider a few options.

At the end of the day – it’s your blog so your rules. And whatever satisfies you best is what you’ll do.

Thanks for your valuable comment Jens. Always nice to see you share your thoughts here.

      Keep up the great work.

      Cheers

  • http://www.moremoo.com Adam

    Hello Ingrid,

first of all Marry Christmas (well I know I am overdue but better later than never, right:) and of course great new year 2011.

And now to the point. I do have and do not have schedule. I do have it because I usually try to post 2-3 articles per week, but on the other hand if I do not push the publish button 2 times per week, I will not get crazy. I know, I know I should have my schedule and stick with it but I am not that kind of person, I just can not force myself to do something if I am not in the right mood or if there is something more important than blogging (and yes for me there are many things more important than blogging:)

Great sharing if I consider you had nothing to post:D

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      HI Adam,

Thanks for the belated wishes :). A very Merry Christmas to you and your family as well.
I too try to publish 2 to 3 times a week. But there are times when I publish less and others when I publish more (although very rarely these days).

However, I know it’s not the end of the world if I don’t get those 2 or 3 out on time. I know I’ll feel guilty about it all week but I won’t panic, because I haven’t made any set promises in regards to my schedule.

The only post people expect to be here every week like clock work is my SuperPost Sunday. That one on the other hand – I would lose sleep over if I weren’t to publish on time lol.

There are indeed things that are more important than blogging. But in my case, this blog and updating regularly is quite high on my priorities list. It’s not often we have priorities we enjoy and this particular one – I love.

I’m glad you liked this piece. Thanks a lot for coming by and sharing your thoughts.

Always nice to see you here Mr. Moremoo :).

      Cheers

Consistency is certainly key. I have a problem of being too spread out. (get your mind out of the gutter!)

Too many projects at once. One thing I keep forgetting about is the fact that with all my blogs, however, I can schedule posts, of which, is something I need to start doing more. Even if it means taking 1 or 2 days a month and just getting all my posts done for one month.

Good article from a sexy lady. Thanks! 😉

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      HI Jon,

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts :).
      .
Writing all your posts in a couple days is definitely one option but in my case – it’s one that will make blogging feel like an assignment to me – and it’s not.

I know many people that use this option but they do it for the week – and not the entire month. If I were to write all my posts in just 1 or 2 days – I would miss writing in here the rest of the time lol.

Writing is something I love to do and I don’t see it as a chore but instead as a pleasure. I would definitely consider writing my posts for the week or for the upcoming 10 days but I don’t think for the month would work for me. But again – this is my personal opinion and not that of any other.

Also – there are always new current events or product launches taking place – so I wouldn’t want to miss writing about something that interests me (i.e. latest SEO plugin, a new Social Media iPad app, etc…).

It’s definitely a system I may consider at some point. Thanks again.

      Cheers and Happy Holidays

  • http://spinsucks.com Gini Dietrich

I actually think there should be some consistency – just like a weekly or daily newspaper. If people know to expect your blog post at 9 a.m. on Fridays, you’re more likely to have success building readership. We counsel all of our clients to do that, even if it’s only once a week. Your point about vacation, though, is different. You’ve already built a readership (partly because of your consistency and partly because you’re hilarious) and you let people know ahead of time you’d be out. That’s different.

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

Well hello there Mrs. D :)

I think consistency is very important – as I mentioned. I’m aiming to get better at it. Although I don’t have a set posting schedule – I do make sure the delay time isn’t huge. It’s something I’m gonna try to work on more next year (damn – that’s like in a week lol!)

The message I was trying to make is that if you miss a 9 am posting on your blog – it’s not the end of the world – at least to me it isn’t. Especially if you haven’t made it public that that’s the time you post. In all honesty, I have no clue what times my favorite blogs post – I know some of the days – even though I often forget – but either way – I still return cause I expect new pieces often (at least that do that).

I know a lot of people state their posting days but I’ve rarely come across those that publicly state their times. I have the utmost respect and admire those that abide by both – unfortunately, I haven’t set either yet – probably because I’m to scared to miss them.

As a solo author, my main goal has been to post frequently and to be as consistent as I can (with the “content is king” crap saying) – but I admit to falling behind at times. I simply don’t want to make it a habit. I care way too much about this blog of mine.

Thank you for both the consistent and hilarious part lol :). I’m doing what I can to keep amazing folks like you coming back. And yes, if you know you’re going to be away – it’s maybe a good idea to let your readers know. No need for all the details just tell them you’ll be off for however long. I find that most readers are understanding – at least they have been with me.

Always great to see you here Oh Fabulous One ;).

Thanks for that solid advice – I hope people read it and take it! I’m gonna try!

      • http://www.skypulsemedia.com/ Howie at Sky Pulse Media

I am so glad I am an Amateur! I like this post. I read a lot of blogs. But I don’t RSS or Subscribe via email. So if you go to my blog and see my most read list I will click on those often (plus a few others) hoping to see a post. But there isn’t always a post. In fact the Ad Contrarian has pissed me off! His last post Nov 15th! He said he is on hiatus but I keep clicking!

Gini does 5 days. This is one of my newest reads so working on learning the schedule. Can’t believe 60 drafts! OH MY! I have 3 in my head. I go one day at a time LOL. But Amateurs can do that! 😉 Very insightful here as always. I want to add 4 more paragraphs…but its christmas so my gift is a short comment! =)

        • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

          Hey Howie,

I hope you had a great weekend. Sorry for my late reply to you here :). It’s been a bit hectic with all the holiday festivities.

It’s funny how we keep going back to those we like to see if there’s something new to read. Not too familiar with the Ad Contrarian but I’ll make sure to start clicking as well haha.

Gini does a superb job with consistency and regularity. Not only that, but her posts and those of her guest are fantastic reads. Short and to the point. Something I need to work on – the short part that is. Ha!

60 drafts is ridiculous I know! Every time I have an idea – I start a little draft so that I can come back to it at a later time but now it’s a bit overwhelming. Like I said though – about half will be seeing the bin soon. You should see how many more I have in my head lol. But again – many will not see the light of day.

I’m glad you like this post :). And a long comment from you – I’ll take any day. So feel free to add as many more paragraphs as you like hehe.

Always a pleasure to see you here Howie. I’m happy that we connected.

          All the best
          Cheers

    Hi Ingrid,

I’m posting once a week these days.

I was publishing posts once a day – and like yourself have more posts set up than I can shake a stick at – but I received little engagement because bloggers are busy creatures. Most of my comments now come in 2 or 3 days after the initial posting.

Now I’ve moved virtually all of my back-ups to Ezinearticles and the other top ezines out there.

Thanks for sharing your insight :)

    RB

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hey Ryan,

Nice to see you here. Thanks for dropping by and taking the time to share your thoughts.

I think as a solo blogger – publishing once a day is quite the challenge – but I certainly admire those that do it!

I’m usually around 1 to 3 a week – it depends on the week though. These days it’s more between 1 or 2.

My main goal is to remain consistent and post frequently but I haven’t set specific days or times yet. I doubt I’ll set a time but I’m highly considering to try the day thing – it might push me even more seeing the pressure it will add. Will see.

It’s funny – I’ve never used ezines for some reason. I know many do and maybe I should give it a shot.

I think you’re doing a great job over at your blog. I much enjoy reading your work and I’ve been doing so more often. Plus – I pretty much see your comments everywhere I go lol. Keep up the awesome work Mr. Biddulph :).

I’ll be looking forward to seeing you around these parts more often.

Merry Christmas and a wonderul New Year to you and your family.
      Cheers

Haha Ingrid. Tthe comment queen with nothing to say…..glad you said nothing to post cos we both know there is plenty to talk about. Writer’s block…maybe, loss of words NEVER lol

I post once a week. Usually on a Tuesday. A couple of weeks I missed cos of guest posting and my own post at the same time so was exhausted with all the blog hopping. With time differences and me wanting to answer the comments ASAP I didn’t do much sleeping. How I love those time zones NOT!

When I started blogging it was suggested I should post 3 times a week. Did that for a few weeks and that was when I was taalking to myself and a couple of people that probably found me by accident. Decided once a week was enough in my small niche.

If I want to write more can go guest post or get on with my “all things lavender” ebook! But all blogs are different and for some once a day is okay. Just not for this lavender lady.

And yes you were missed…..far too quiet on Twitter when you were on hols 😉 But see we all came back to see when you would get back to work and write another mega post for us to enjoy. Way to go Ingrid :-) You definitely rock the blogosphere. So keep rockin’ gal.

    Patricia Perth Australia

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      YaY Patricia is here :)!

I think You and I can relate very much to what you said so well. “Writer’s block…maybe, loss of words NEVER” haha.

Oddly enough I have been at a loss of words at times – rarely, but it does happen.

You see, exactly the point I was trying to make! I had no idea that you post on Tuesday’s and the face that you may have missed a couple didn’t seem to matter to your readers. They most definitely missed a new piece from you when they came and didn’t see one but they still came back!

As for the time difference and OUR comment syndrome ;), I feel the same way. I too, try to reply promptly and make sure that I reply to every single comment I receive. But with the time difference, I often stay up very late – but I do that anyways so it’s okay lol.

As for when I started blogging and new nothing about it and I was getting advice from people who knew even less than me what a blog actually was and all the things it entailed. I was told to post 3 or 4 times a day! That my readers wanted to continuously open my site to find something new at any time. Goes to show what a little reading from others who know their stuff can actually do.

I often hear that 2 to 3 times a week is a good rate. I try to abide by that – since it’s something I should be able to handle and it’s something I’d like to stick to. However, I do slack off – for many reasons. But it doesn’t me make me less passionate or motivated. I still love this blog and writing in it and will always try to find the time to update it regularly with valuable or entertaining content that caters to my readers.

I think everyone sets their own schedule depending on their time, priorities and level of blogging. I’m sure it might make a difference if you’re a part-timer or full-timer, self-employed or hobbyist, if it’s your sole income generator or not. Many types of bloggers with many reasons.

In January I published 51 posts. I was eating, breathing, living blogging. But are they all worth the read? They’re entertaining sure – but do they cater to the audience that I have now? At that time I was still very new and had a reader and a half. I still had no clue about all things blogging. I simply had a site and wrote in it thinking people may land on it by luck or through simple word of mouth. As you can see, I’ve learned a lot since.

In February, I had 29 and in March 23. I haven’t reached those numbers since then. But I have reached better results – the kinds that matter from the people that matter.

It’s nice to know however, that when you do take a little break, people miss you. And it’s nice to know that they come back to welcome you and your writing with open arms. Thank you Patricia :).

I’m doing what I can to rock this fabulous blogosphere but then again – so are you! I have no doubt that 2011 will be even more successful for both you, your blog and your ETSY store.

Best of luck to both of us and a BIG Cheers to a wonderful New Year.

Always a pleasure to see you here and to reply to your thoughtful and valuable comments Lavender Lady.

      Ciao

    Hi Ingrid,

I’ve just started to read a number of the blogs of those who’ve visited my blog, that’s cool, but my goodness, those who put out a post per day: oh my, I can’t keep up with them!!!

Talking about info overloading, or it’s like getting too many emails from the marketers, that’s too much reading to do! How do you keep up which the prolific bloggers? I’d rather they slow down.

    Ben Wan.

      Hey Ben,

Nice to see you here again.

I gotta tell you – those solo writers that publish quality posts each day – or even 5 or 6 a week – well, I have the utmost respect for them. It’s a very challenging schedule to maintain. I tried for a few months (January 51 posts – February 18 – March 23) but then realized I would rather focus on the content and quality of my words in stead of the quantity and high frequency.

And yes, as you said, it can be overwhelming to keep up with them as a reader. So much to take in. Most of the prolific blogging sites I visit are multi-author and although it would be great if every author managed to capture my attention from the getgo, not all do. So there are always a few posts here and there that I may not read till the end or just skim through.

But other solo ones that I read – that do publish like dynamic robots – well, somehow they’ve managed to keep me hooked. It would be nice sometimes if they slowed down so I can digest what I learned the day before, but…

The difference here between the marketers and the prolific authors, is that they bombard you with information (and not emails) that you yourself have to go and read – unless you are subscribed and they send you daily emails. Most authors I know, do not send me an email for every new post they publish. Had they done that, then…

In general, I like to think that it’s all in the writing.

It’s the way a topic is presented. It’s the way the author puts the words together to make them appealing/attractive/entertaining/humorous/useful…for the reader. There are many writers that can do that almost every time and everyday. It’s remarkable. And I for one, will take that kind overload anytime. But in all honestly, they could do that with 2 or 3 articles a week – tops – and I’d still come back for more!

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts Ben. It seems my reply to you is much more a post than it is a comment haha.

      Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

      LOL

      Welcome back H.E!

Imagine that – me with nothing to say but once I start to say something, I can’t stop lol ;).

Actually I like this post. A lot of people tend to stress about missing their posting schedule once in a rare while – and from a reader’s and writer’s perspective – I think it’s okay. I’m not gonna’ punish anyone by not returning to their site if they missed one – I probably won’t even know that they did.

Anyhow – those ramblings in the post were just my personal 2 cents on the topic. I’m sure everyone has their own opinion.

I’m glad that you still come back to read my posts and even happier that you find them interesting.

A very Merry and Lovely Christmas to you and your family as well Had.
