Send Money to Friends on Facebook

20080908 dollar euro m 01 Send Money to Friends on FacebookIs there anything you can’t do or share on Facebook? Apparently not! It seems that the ever so popular and powerful social network does more than just allow you to connect with ‘friends’ and share photos, videos, messages, statuses, web links…Now, you can also transfer small amounts of money of up to €50 or about $68 [only Euros and US dollars for now – Sterling support by the end of the month] to friends (only) using an application called Buxter.

The application was developed by ClickandBuy; a London based payment service geared towards “normal” Facebook users and application developers and marketers,. It allows users (friends) to quickly and securely exchange money among each other as well as buy Facebook applications.

ClickandBuy already has around 13 million users. New Facebook members wishing to transfer money through Buxter will need to sign up for a ClickandBuy account first. Although the transfer of money between ClickandBuy accounts is free, moving money to other accounts such as a bank account, will be subject to a 1.9% charge (of the amount) or $3 (€2) – whichever is greater.

Other services that ClickandBuy offers Facebook users:

  • Send and receive money
  • Withdraw money form ClickandBuy account
  • Upload money from ClickandBuy account to Buxter account
  • Purchase Facebook applications

Do you think this service will take off? Would you use it? Post your comments.

Yours Truly is…Blog of the Week!!!

blog of the week Yours Truly is...Blog of the Week!!!So, I just got some news tonight that put quite a big smile on my face :)! No…I didn’t win the lottery (although that would have been nice too ;)) nor did my long lost childhood pet guinea pig [Snuffaluffagus] find his way home and crawl back into his cage!

nittyGriddy was selected as “Blog of the Week” on Lebanon Aggregator!!!

From Lebanon Aggregator:

As the blogger “Ingrid” herself put it:

Its a type of social media journal that covers net news and more. there are numerous categories such as humor, entertainment, social media, culture, news, tech talk, health/science, art/design, mishmash and so forth.

Okay, my take? It’s very nice to see a blogger group under one blog so many information, articles, ideas, anything you might think about it, or actually not think about it!

What’s also impressive is how serious Ingrid takes her blog, and you can notice that form the quality of the blog itself, logo, sections, categories, divisions, menu etc..

So dear readers, please meet Ingrid (twitter), and do check her blog NittyGriddy.com

This news is the kind of news a blogger wants and likes to hear. It’s the kind of news that makes you realize, that all the endless hours spent researching, reading and writing are well worth it! You see, I already know it’s worth it for me, because I love writing in this blog – regardless of how many people read what I have to say [although the more, the merrier] – plus, I’ve become somewhat of a walking talking encyclopedia of random shit knowledge. But, it’s also encouraging and nice to know that your hard work is appreciated by others – that’s a pretty big reward in itself!

On that note, I would like to thank Liliane and Lebanon Aggregator for this really cool mention! I’m truly flattered and psyched about the awesome news! I look forward to continuing publishing articles and keeping you [my readers, fans, supporters, friends, fellow bloggers…] interested and entertained!

Merci Buckets,

Griddy

My Scores from “The Oatmeal” Quizzes!

Every now and then, if I can’t sleep, I’ll look for ways to entertain myself until my eyes get tired. Usually, that entails: watching TV, eating junk food, reading comics, surfing the net to find new and interesting articles to post on this blog, rearranging the drawers in my night stand, counting sheep, whatever…you know what I mean!

Well tonight, I went straight to The Oatmeal to see if the very cool Matthew Inman had published some new comics on his site. And to my despair, he hadn’t! But there’s actually a good reason for that as he so cleverly explained; he recently signed a book deal [yay :)] and will be concentrating on that for the next 4 to 6 weeks.

Therefore: Me = shit out of luck! Him =  awesome! And best of luck!

So instead, I decided to take a few of his fun and pretty wacky quizzes – and for some strange, Godforsaken reason, I decided to share my results with all of you. Enjoy!

iPad to Hit Stores on April 3rd

ipad from apple site 300x191 iPad to Hit Stores on April 3rdWe finally know when the “giant version of the iPhone without the phone” [as it’s been popularly called] will be out! Earlier today, Apple announced that the Wi-Fi model of the iPad will be available to buy in the United States as of Saturday, April 3rd. The Wi-Fi + 3G models will be released sometime later that month. Also available on April 3rd, will be the iBooks app which you will be able to download for free from the App Store.

However, if you’re really anxious to secure one and would rather avoid the 10 mile long lines that will most probably start piling up the night before, you can pre-order both models from Apple’s online store as of March 12th. You can also reserve a Wi-Fi model online and pick it up from an Apple retail store on April 3rd.

As I previously mentioned in my January 28 post about the iPad, the suggested retail price of each model will be as follows:

For Wi-Fi models

  • $499 for 16GB
  • $599 for 32GB
  • $699 for 64GB

For Wi-Fi + 3G models

  • $629 for 16GB
  • $729 for 32GB
  • $829 for 64GB

As for when it will be available in the MENA region and most importantly for how much…that is yet to be revealed! However, we do know that all models of the iPad will be available in late April in: Australia, Canada, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.

So if you live in the Middle East, I guess you’ll just have to stay tuned to find out when you can get your hands on what I’m sure will end up being ‘a ridiculously overpriced’ iPad!

Another ‘A+ Video’ from the Twitter King, @aplusk!

Thank God for Ashton’s awesome tweets! This is another of his A+ videos – which, hands down, I’m gonna’ have to agree with. And like he said himself…not just because he’s in it! “The State of the Internet”, as it’s cleverly called, was made by the extremely talented JESS3 aka Jesse Thomas. Pretty much everything you wanted to know about the online world we love so much (and more) is creatively showcased in this fantastic animation. An absolute ‘must see!’

Balmbastic Lips!!!

As you can see [with a lot of my post titles], I’m a big fan of the whole “play on words” thing! I just figure they’re more entertaining to read, plus they’re fun to come up with :). But anyways, on to the main subject…

Have you (and I mean ladies) ever used those famous lip balms that plump your lips? I’m sure a lot of you have either tried them or even often use them. To tell you honestly, I haven’t yet, but I’ve been dying to see what a “Jolie” style mouth would look like on me. Well, maybe not dying to…but I am curious.

My friend, who shall remain nameless [but who knows I’m writing this about her as she was kind enough to send me the pictures – good sport!] had the misfortune of trying one of Sephora’s regular lip glosses. It turns out that she may have been allergic to some ingredient or other because believe you me when I tell ya, the sight wasn’t pretty – but definitely laugh out loud funny ;)!

So without further ado, I present you with an image of my friend’s boombastic lips a little while after she tried on the gloss. Granted, they look a bit gross, but again, still hilarious and worth sharing! Needless to say that she didn’t leave the house for 2 days and wore a baseball cap on the third. Yah, as if that’s gonna’ take the focus off those mama’s!

Lips 300x236 Balmbastic Lips!!!

Oh, and here’s a teeny tiny picture of the infamous gloss.

Anything like this ever happen to you or someone you know? Post your comments.

*Note: This is only one person’s counter effect of the product. It should not be assumed that anyone who will use this brand of lip gloss will experience this. Regardless though; Sephora still rocks!

Madoff Made Off with Millions of My Money!

aptronyms pic Madoff Made Off with Millions of My Money! What a title! It kinda sounds like a tongue twister. It was either that or “Madoff Made Off with Much of My Money.” But then I realized, who cares?! Cause this post has nothing to do with tongue twisters or that scum bag!

I’ve come across several versions of this title on the internet, and it got me thinking, how truly perfect Bernie’s name suits his former “profession” of: swindler, thief, crook, low life…so I became curious and did a little digging to find out what other famous people had names as such and whether there was a term to describe it.

A little bit of research led me to the concept of nominative determinism; the theory that “a person’s name is given an influential role in reflecting key attributes of his job, profession or general life.” Very similar to this are Perfect Fit Last Names (PFLN) or aptronyms; a word coined by American newspaper columnist, Franklin P. Adams that refers to “a name that matches the occupation or character of its’ owner, often in a humorous or ironic way.”

Timeless author, Charles Dickens, was famous for *‘aptro-naming’ characters in his novels. His best friend and biographer, John Forster said that Dickens made “characters real existences, not by describing them, but by letting them describe themselves;” e.g. Ebenezer Scrooge, Edwin Drood, Pecksniff, M’Choakumchild…

John Bunyan’s 1678 novel, The Pilgrim’s Progress is another example, as it includes fictional aptronyms such as Mr. Talkative and Mr. Worldly Wiseman.

Other great examples of famous names that illustrate these 2 ideas (nominative determinism and aptronyms) are:

  • William Wordsworth – poet
  • Sally Ride – astronaut
  • Usain Bolt – Jamaican sprinter and Olympic Gold Medalist
  • Russell Brain – neurologist
  • Marc Rich – billionaire financier
  • Bob Rock – rock music producer
  • Anna Smashnova – tennis player
  • Larry Speakes – Whitehouse spokesman under president Ronald Reagan
  • Dallas Raines – meteorologist
  • Lord Justice Laws – a judge in the Court of Appeal
  • Alan Ball – English football player
  • Layne Beachley – Australian world champion surfer
  • Lake Speed – former Nascar driver
  • Margaret Spellings – Education Secretary under George W. Bush
  • Chris Moneymaker – accountant and winner of the 2003 World Series of Poker
  • Chuck Long – former NFL quarterback
  • Martin Short – actor/comedian
  • Thomas Crapper – sanitaryware manufacturer
  • Mi Suk Yang – prostitute arrested in Georgia

Ok, I think you get the idea!

Do you know of any others? Post your comments.

*Note:‘aptro-naming’ is not a real word.

Google My Ride!

Asif 21 Google My Ride!

It may look like a psychedelic version of a “Pimp My Ride” mobile…but it’s not! It’s none other than Asif Hussain Shah’s taxi! WHO/WHAT? A Pakistani cab driver turned author. Just Google him and see for yourself…I sure as heck did! Oh, and if that’s not enough, you can also YouTube him and watch the 5 minute documentary [with “Memories” from “Cats” playing in the background] about his book,“For Hire”; a narration of his personal experiences with thousands of customers during his last 15 years of cab driving in Islamabad.

My Thoughts:

  1. One of the most original (if not best) Google ad integration I’ve ever seen.
  2. No need to be high on ‘shrooms’ to fully experience this trip!
  3. If I ever need a cab in Islamabad, he’ll be the first person I call.
  4. Goes to show what a bit of dedication and hard work can lead to.
  5. Google better be sponsoring his book and LIFE!
  6. Very inspiring – way to go Asif!

Homemade Flying Hovercraft

@aplusk – aka Ashton Kutcher – has once again pointed me (and another another 4 million plus people) in the direction of this absolutely awesome video of a homemade flying hovercraft. In the 1 minute video from YouTube, New Zealand mechanic Rudy Heeman shows off his latest garage invention – a 2 passenger hovercraft which takes off when it reaches 70 km per hour [the first of its kind]. Oh, and it’s FOR SALE (or will be soon) for about $13,000!

All I can say is: Wow…I want one + a life jacket :)! Anyone else?

  2. Rebuild infrastructure

From your mobile:

Much like it did with the Haitian relief effort, the Mobile Giving Foundation has launched an SMS campaign for micro-donations of $5 and $10. So if you live in the United States, go ahead and send a text message to any one of these numbers.

Massive Earthquake Hits Chile

Feb. 27 at 3:34 am (local time):

0228 web sub6QUAKE 950x775 Massive Earthquake Hits Chile Another devastating earthquake has struck; only this time, it’s Chile. The 8.8 magnitude quake, one of the strongest ever recorded, shook the country for about a minute and a half causing widespread damage and triggering a tsunami warning across the Pacific [most of Central and South America].

The US has already started evacuating the shoreline communities of Hawaii as a Tsunami is probable to arrive within the next few hours.

According to Chile’s national emergency office, at least 120 people have been killed so far. Although the force of this earthquake is about 800 to 1,000 times stronger than the one that struck Haiti last month, the destruction and death toll [by early estimates] seems lower.

Boston.com’s “The Big Picture”, has collected some incredible yet disturbing images of the aftermath. You can see the full gallery of images here.

nittyGriddy would like to express it’s deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those who were killed in this tragic event. My thoughts are with all those who are suffering and have been left homeless. God Bless.
