On Commenting and My Top 2 April (S)Talkers

Trophy On Commenting and My Top 2 April (S)TalkersThe Power that is Comments

If you know anything about me, then you know how I love meaningful comments – both getting them and leaving them.

Much like people are the life of a party, I believe that comments are the life of a blog. Of course, I’m not talking about the bullshit drive-by’s that simply say, “hey, great post”. But then again, take a look at this blog and others like Aunt Gini’s, Mufasa’s, Bonsai Boy’s, Surfin’ Srini’s, Mark Schaefer’s, JF’s, Mark Harai’s…and you’ll see what I’m talking about when I say meaningful!

These blogs as well as others are the epitome of community involvement and engagement.

Why?

Because besides being the friendly and intelligent peeps that they are, they also take the time to reply in kind and leave some thoughtful comments when they’re inspired by a blog post.

Stuart Mills from Unlock the Door, recently published a fantastic list post of 20 bloggers who you’d want to comment on your blog and why. It’s a definite must read and another great example of community participation.

I also second the people he’s mentioned in there!

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, YES…I made the list ;).

You will often hear that the gold is in the comments – and it couldn’t be more true.

Why?

Because you will find a ton of value in what others are saying – even more so than in the actual post. I don’t mean to take away from the author here but one reflection leads to another, one topic or opinion leads to a discussion, one head leads to 2, 3, 4 and more. And more heads is always better than one!

I rarely skip the comments section of a post that’s intrigued or inspired me somehow. It’s where I occasionally find new ideas for blog posts; it’s where I connect with like-minded individuals; it’s where I learn from and about a commenter; it’s where I get my chance to unleash my 1000 word novella’s lol.

But I’m getting way ahead of myself here. This post isn’t about comments and commenting in general – you’ll be seeing one or two of these from me in the near future ;). I mean heck, I can’t possibly be the only blogger not to write about that topic – especially with my commenting reputation ;).

I know today is generally dedicated to my kick-ass Bring IT! series, but I wanted the chance to feature my top 2 commenters for the month of April who combined have left about 70 comments! Seriously – that’s pretty frickin’ impressive!

Top Commenters Widget Plus a Medal

A little while ago, I installed the Top Commenters Widget so as to showcase my 20 Top Talkers (or friendly stalkers lol) of the month. If you’re not familiar with this plugin, check it out. It’s a great way to reward your active commenters and build excitement to entice others to join the discussion.

Of course, there will always be those who try and compete for first place like (cough) Bran, Jamey and Marcus – which makes it all the more fun ;).

But what I did differently here, is have it include a little shabby lookin’ medal next to the name of those folks who have commented 7 or more times within a particular month. But it seems I”ve underestimated the wonderful community I’ve built here for I’ve come to realize that 7 is way too easy! So I’m up-ing it to 10!

Don’t get me wrong, I”m tremendously flattered because what this means is:

  1. People are enjoying what they read here
  2. My content is inspiring enough for folks to take the time and share their thoughts
  3. People are talking with one another creating discussion threads – and that’s what I love.

You see – even more proof that it’s not simply about talking with the author – but about talking with each other.

Anyhow, this blog saw quite a few comments from numerous folks this past month. But don’t take my word for it, have a look for yourself.

Top Commenters on nittyGriddy for April1 On Commenting and My Top 2 April (S)Talkers

And those are just the folks who have commented 6 or more times. There’s quite the list that comes beneath these 20 but I figured you didn’t want to be scrolling till tomorrow Ha!

Griddy’s Top 2 Friendly Stalkers for April

In the world of blogging – having a friendly stalker (FS) is a great thing – it’s like an honor. It’s what every blogger aspires to attract on their blog. They’re no regular Spammy Stalkers – they’re the cream of the crop; the elitists!

The friendly stalker is one that is sharp and witty; one that supports you and engages with you and others in the comments; one that leaves well-thought out and often thought-provoking view points; one that is opinionated; one that is respectful; one that appreciates you and your work regardless of whether they agree with you or not…basically, an FS is the stalker you want to have and want to become!

Acknowledging my commenters allows me to ONE – thank them for their continued loyalty and TWO – reward them for their efforts and support.

Although I’d love to give out cash prizes, “real” gold medals and cases of wine – I’m afraid throwing a little link juice their way will have to do for now. But once I become the Onassis of the Internet, which of course I will then rename the “Gridnet” lol, you can expect all those things and more ;)!

FS #1 – Marcus Sheridan aka Mufasa from The Sales Lion

My good friend Mufasa has definitely been marking his territory over here at nittyGriddy and elsewhere. This past month, he left 40 fantabulous comments for me and my readers. If he wasn’t a gazillion miles away right now, I would have probably suffocated him with a big old hug. So I guess a virtual one will have to do for now (sigh).

If you’ve visited this blog before or read any of my SuperPost Sunday’s, then you’re bound to have seen Marcus’s name and articles mentioned here. He’s the definition of a community builder and nurturer – and incredible quality that I’d like to think we share in common. Marcus’s story-telling ability is truly impressive as he manages to captivate you from start to finish in each one of his insightful blog posts.

It’s no wonder he’s the ROI of Inbound Marketing for his public speech skills and charisma are so magnetic that they draw you in and make you want to know more about the main man behind the golden mane. Not only is Marcus the driving force behind the popular and much talked about blog, The Sales Lion – but he is also the owner of the very successful swimming pool company, River Pools and Spas. And if that’s not enough, he single-handedly turned his company blog into the #1 swimming pool blog in the world. Now if that’s not impressive, I don’t know what is.

I hear that if you buy a fiberglass pool from him he will personally give you ferocious sales tips and swimming lessons hehe.

Seriously though, if you don’t already follow my favorite cat, then shame on you! I suggest you go follow him on Twitter, fan him on Facebook and religiously read his blog – basically, start stalking him immediately!

These are Mufasa’s last 3 articles:

Congrats M on being the #1 commenter of the month!

FS #2 – Davina Brewer aka QATA from 3Hats Communications

I had the pleasure of connecting with the Empress Davina, also known as “the queen of Acronyms” a few months ago over at Aunt Gini’s blog (if my memory serves me right). And let me tell ya folks, this fabulous PR lady is about as sharp and witty as they come.

It was hard for me not to notice Davina as her straight-forward, lengthy, Griddy-style comments were just about everywhere I turned. Actually, she left 29 of them on this blog in April!

Besides having to check out my comment competitor, I just had to know who the funny lady behind the solo PR company, 3Hats Communications was! After all, she had me LOLing and looking up acronyms in the dictionary almost every time I read something of hers – whether in a comment or in her smart, no BS, tell it like it is, Public Relations and Social Media blog.

Davina is pretty much the poster child for engagement. She can find something meaningful to say in any discussion and add on to any conversation creating a mile-long thread. She’s also a fine example of what a rant should look like. Seriously people – if you haven’t read one of her well-crafted, witty and humorous posts, you’re missing out! Much like the famous Redhead, the empress can bitch-slap the heck out of a topic and somehow do it with poise and humor.

But hey, don’t just take my word for it, check out Davina’s last 3 articles:

I’m sure I don’t need to tell you to start soaking in her insights and stalking her if you don’t already. But I will make your life easier by leading you directly to her Twitter and her awesome blog.

Congrats Davina on being the #2 commenter of the month!

The Elder Scrolls 6 PC Download includes a Help file. This will tell you what is needed and what you can do to get rid of these problems. Intel i5-2400 processor with 8GB RAM can run the game with 3GB NVIDIA GTX 780 card. This is the minimum requirement, but if you are an AMD user, then you need slightly different specifications. AMD FX-8320 is enough for 4GB / AMD R9 290 graphics card. RAM requirements remain the same. Use Window 7 or later running on a 64-bit processor. Hardscaping involves more than the simple landscaping features in one’s backyard. Hardscapes can be utilized in both residential and commercial properties to increase to value of the land where the property is housed. Hardscaping can easily be defined as covering any exposed soil, dirt or sand with pavers, concrete, brick, stone or other outdoor flooring material. Some examples of hardscaping commonly used in residential and commercial settings are paved walkways, sidewalks, waterfalls, streets, retaining walls and driveways. Although not commonly considered a form of hardscaping, ponds, pools and other water landscaping are very much classified as hardscape. The materials used to construct the various forms of water landscaping are used as barriers to retain water, thus preventing soil, dirt or sand to come in contact with the water.

All in all, fiberglass pools are the most attractive choice, because they save time, money, and energy. Ever since the mid 1950’s, fiberglass has been the fastest growing segment in the American pool market. Today, they remain as the most popular type of pool because of their sturdiness and flexibility.

  • http://www.seasonalworld.com/ fiberglass pools

Swimming pools can be great assets to property, as they add value to the house, and provide and easy way to relax during the summer. There are many different types of swimming pools that are in the market today: a gunite, concrete, vinyl-lined, or fiberglass pool. Fiberglass pools are popular because they do not fade or build up algae on their surface, and are sturdier than both vinyl and concrete.

    Griddy,

You know, the power that IS comments has been made apparent as I just invested a whole mess of time reading the ones on this article. I just laugh at the fun “the regulars” carry on here. This is seriously an enjoyable place.

    That said…

The comments from Fast Printing and nursery furniture manchester are my favorites.  :)

      Hey Jon,

I bet the comments were more fun to read than my actual post eh? hehe
See?  That’s exactly what I mean in that the gold is in the comments :).

As for Fast Printing and Furniture whatever – Grrr….I can’t believe they got passed my spam bodyguards haha. Damn those sneaky spammers!

Glad you enjoyed spending some time here and I’m even happier that you saw the social proof to what I was saying.

      Have a great Monday.

Your blog is such a ball of fun!

I really like this post, and for quite a few reasons. First, your points about commenting are right on. There have been several posts lately on the value of commenting on blogs. Some have been pro, others against, and while I always read the “against” votes with interest, I just can’t get there myself. Why would you not want comments on what you are writing? Why would you not want to take the time to tell someone else what you thought about their writing? I don’t get it.

However, you do something unique here too, in that you take it one step further and talk about promoting your regular readers/commenters. Now that’s an idea that I wish I had thought of. I really value the people who come by and read and comment on my blog, but there has never been an intuitive way (other than to comment back) to say, “Oh, I so treasure you and the time you spent here!”

I’ll have to work on that. Thank you for the inspiration :)

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hey Margie,

Fabulous seeing you here :). Thanks for taking the time to drop by to join the conversation.

In all honesty, I couldn’t even fathom not having comments on this blog or not listening and actively engaging with commenters for that matter!

If someone has taken the time to come by and share their thoughts on something you wrote – then it’s only common courtesy and sense to accord that same respect and respond.

I always say that I write for me first! And although that’s true – I also write for my audience all while knowing who they are. And I could read blog posts all day long about why not to have comments or why they may not be “valuable” but much like you – I still wouldn’t be convinced.

Actually – Corbett Barr from ThinkTraffic.net hosted a little blog-off (debate) a while back between 2 bloggers arguing the for and against having comments on a blog. And though the against reasons might have been valid – I don’t really buy it!

Let’s be honest here – if I don’t want the sound of crickets on this blog. I want people to share stuff not only with me but with others as well. I want people to learn from and about each other all while potentially becoming friends or acquaintances.

Anyways – I’m sure you know what I mean with by all that.

As for rewarding commenters – although I acknowledge, thank and reply in kind to everyone that comes by – there are just some folks who go above and beyond. And I’m not talking about simply quantity here – but quality. I pride myself on having a comments section that’s equivalent to eBooks. And I love that. People feel at home here and that’s exactly the feeling I want to instill.

Marcus and Davina are great communicators as are many, many others! They don’t simply engage – they’re engaging! I’m borrowing this little term from Danny Brown’s recent post in regard to that but it’s very true here.

What I mean by that is that they don’t simply leave their 2 cents and take off – they come back and add on to the discussion. They read other people’s comments and join those conversations as well. I think it’s fantastic.

I often joke that this place is like a mini version of Central Perk where like-minded individuals come to discuss, learn, make friends and have a little fun a long the way.

Anyhow – it seems like I’ve left you with a novel for a reply but then again – I sometimes tend to do that haha.

Once again – thanks a lot for sharing your views here and I’m glad you found some kind of inspiration through this post – and hopefully others.

Hope to see you around these parts more often.

Happy Sunday to ya rockstar ;).
      Cheers

  • http://www.blistmarketing.com Brandon Yanofsky

When I first started blogging, I hated comments. I hated reading other blogs and having to read through 20 comments before posting my own.

But as i read through those comments, I started realizing, as you said, that there is much value in the comments. I started following up with commenters on twitter and I’ve made great friendships out of many.

I’ve realized that comments are really where the power of blogging exists.

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hey Brandon,

It’s funny – because when I first started I would read people’s comments and then shy away from leaving my own. I had no clue as to the importance of them or the benefits of joining the conversation and adding on to what other people or the author said. Obviously, I learned otherwise and leaving my pennies on a blog post that inspired me now comes naturally to me. I don’t do it to get attention or traffic or whatever – I simply write what I have to say all while listening to what others said as well.

You’re right in that the comments is where the power of blogging lies. It’s where all the good stuff happens lol.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this Brandon. I appreciate your honesty.
Hope to see you over here again soon.

      Have a great day.
      Cheers

Somehow I managed to completely disappear without being forgotten. How is this even possible? I can’t even begin to tell you how flattered I am to have made such a lasting impression with you that I was capable of virtually falling off the face of the planet for 2+ months and yet you still care to mention me in your posts. As if the heavenly painted Charleston sunrise and cool breeze this morning weren’t enough to soothe my soul, your enduring friendship certainly is.

I’ve made the empty promise before to return more regularly, so I’ll bite my tongue today, but it is my hope to once again battle Bran (clearly Marcus and Davina are setting the bar ever so higher now, too) in a no-holds barred contest for commentary glory.

In all honesty, I never commented on your blog to achieve some sort of commenting notoriety; I did it because you engendered a thriving, caring community. You created an idea rich environment not based around your own opinions but your hospitality and openness toward friendly debate.

Your commenters’ medalist list is certainly a testament to each reader’s commitment to participating, but it is also a reflection of who you are as a person. A man with many friends has 1 of 2 things: 1) a great deal of money or 2) a great heart. You certainly possess the latter, but here’s to your success and attainment of the 1st.

    As always, your friend,

    Jimbo

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      My dear Jamey,

YOU? Forgotten? Why, I don;t see that happening any time soon my friend. Just because life and work get in the way sometime – it doesn’t mean we forget those we’ve grown to like and befriend.

Our memories can often deceive us but you’d be surprised by how words make a strong impact and make us feel and yours have have done just that over and over again! So again – you have NOT been forgotten by me or any other person you have touched since your journey into the blogosphere.

I know exactly why you comment Jimbo – it’s for the same reasons as me and many others we know. It’s a self-less reason and we don’t expect anything in return. We simply share our thoughts on things that have inspired us. And in the process we get to meet incredible folks.

I hope things are going well for you. Please do keep in touch whenever you have time and best of luck to you with all your work. I know how dedicated and ambitious you are and I hope things are going the way you want them to.

As always – I can’t thank you enough for all that you said here. You still manage to put the biggest smile on my face with your kind words.

It’s great to see a Jimbo comment on this blog again and I (and many) await your return ;).

Wishing you all the best and more my friend.
      Talk to you soon
      Ciao

Hi Ingrid – you have built an awesome community here miss and what makes any community great is connecting with people like Marcus and Davina who truly do deliver value everywhere they go.

You have to have a mindset to do that consistently. It just doesn’t happen by mistake. These are good people doing what they do best; serving others with their time and their experience and making life better for all who are part of their life, be it clients, friends or participants in this conversation.

There are a lot of takers in the world and it’s people Marcus and Davina and many other folks we call friends that bring balance to an unbalanced world and hope to many seeking answers for their life.

I know I’ve said this before Griddy, but your work is important. The work that our friends are doing is important. There’s much need in the world and very few seeking out ways to contribute to providing for it. It seems most are satisfied figuring out how to take more for themselves.

So cheers to all 3 of you!!!

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hola Mark,

You have built quite the community of your own my friend and you nurture it so well and are so genuine with each of your posts and interactions with people in the comments. It’s so refreshing to see it happen as it does with the folks I mentioned here and some others.

But you’re right in that Mufasa and Davina have a special gift when it comes to joining the conversation and adding valuable insight wherever they go.

You’re right in that there are a lot of takers but after a while it becomes quite easy to spot them. You know when people are visiting just to be seen or if they’re there because they truly have something to add or want to get to know others better. It’s like in real life – you know who the ass kissers and moochers are and you know who the self-less one’s are as well.

People like you, @MarcusSheridan:disqus @ginidietrich:twitter @skooloflife:twitter @markwschaefer:disqus @dannybrown:twitter @UnlockTheDoor:disqus @liveurlove:twitter @davinabrewer:disqus and many many others – are what make this journey worthwhile and all the more pleasant. You folks not only manage to bring quality and value to the table every time, but you bring your real personalities and life experiences with them as well.

It’s no wonder we all bump into each other and often visit some of the same blogs. We connect and are attracted to like-minded individuals and can pick up on those folks who share the same principles and ethics in a heat beat.

Thanks so much for being who you are Mark. I hear Srini has been teaching your kids to surf :). That’s just awesome!

Don’t forget – we’re all still expecting to see pictures of you standing on the board hehe.

Have a great Thursday. And thanks again for your kind and supportive words.

      Cheers

      • http://markharai.com Mark Harai

Ah, my sleepless Ingrid : )

Thanks for this awesome reply Griddy – I’m now set to make Thursday an awesome day – Thanks!

*** It might be a while before you get those pics… just sayin – hehe!

        Cheers missy!

        • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

I’ll wait for them – got all the time in the world hehe ;).Enjoy your weekend Mark!

  • http://www.adorabletots.co.uk nursery furniture manchester

well, I do try to make them meaningful in some way and you’re very right
about Marcus and Davina. It’s really no surprise that these 2 peeps are
in the top 10 list here :).

  • http://www.WaxingUnLyrical.com Shonali Burke

To see Davina calling herself “queen of the bitch slap” was worth it in and of itself, LOL! And I love the alliteration, Griddy.

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

Well she does have some fantabulous rants – so I couldn’t resists to point out the similarities :). But yes, I just love seeing professional women refer to themselves as such haha ;).

      Thanks Shonali

  • http://www.thejackb.com/ The JackB

Hmmm….Now I feel like I should leave 76 comments so that I can try and move up the list. 😉 Ok, I won’t comment just to comment but I will agree that the gold is often found in the comment section. I qualify that because some blogs have a ton of comments but they lack substance.

I suppose that some of it depends on what you want from your blog and what it is about- but sometimes I wonder…

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      LOL :)!

I was actually afraid of that – that people would be commenting for the sake of commenting to appear in the sidebar and possibly be featured in a post – but with the genuine community of people I have here – I sincerely doubt it will be a problem – although I do love to see them compete with each other in a funny yet healthy manner lol.

And you’re right – some blogs do have a ton of comments and lag substance and sometimes it’s unfortunately the other way around – where you see incredible content and value and not too many people partaking in the conversation and adding their insight. Oh well….

Thanks for dropping by Jack. I appreciate it.

      Cheers

  • http://www.silentkite.co.uk/ Promotional Merchandise

But what I did differently here, is have it include a little shabby
lookin’ medal next to the name of those folks who have commented 7 or
more times within a particular month. But it seems I”ve underestimated
the wonderful community I’ve built here for I’ve come to realize that 7
    is way too easy!
    So I’m up-ing it to 10!

  • http://billdorman.wordpress.com Bill Dorman

Marcus & Davina definitely stir it up and it’s a testament to you having a fun place to hang out in.

I told you Marcus was trying to do this to dominate your site and have you all for himself, but instead he’s created a monster. He is a machine, because he does this at other sites as well. Probably another non-sleeper in this world.

Congrats to your popularity and whatever you are doing, keep doing it because is seems to be the right recipe.

    Ciao

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hola Bill,

Mufasa and QATA indeed to have this wonderful knack to stir things up and create a pleasant atmosphere for all of us to enjoy.

It looks like that lion is marking his territory haha. And I think he secretly has clones like Gini and I.

I’d say you’re the popular one my friend! I keep bumping into you everywhere and it’s such a treat!

      Have a great Sunday.
      See you soon I hope.

      Cheers

    Hi Ingrid
I love the Top Commenters Widget as well. It is as you say a nice way to give something back to the people who take the time to comment on your blog. It looks like Marcus “The Lion King” is going for this months title as well :-)

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hey Thomas,

For that reason and more is why I like that plugin – although I wish I could find a way to make those medals look a little nicer lol.

And yes – Mufasa is once again in the lead – but the month has only begun so there’s no saying who the winner will be ;).

      Cheers

  • http://twitter.com/lorigosselin Lori Gosselin

Griddy, not to undermine the plugin but I think you’re personality would encourage the comments all on its own. That and the personal ruminating you do at the beginning of your posts! It’s reading that which makes my fingers reach for the keyboard.
Speaking of commenting on blogs, I see it this way. I read, I’m inspired, I comment. I don’t really want to be thanked for commenting – because isn’t it better if I do it for me, rather than for you? That is, isn’t it better if I comment because I want to comment, and not just to make you feel good. The former means you’ve done a great job of engaging me; the latter means I was feeling sorry for you, or I thought you needed my comment. It’s about the comments, yes, but doesn’t it have to be more than that?

To borrow from the lovely Davina’s style for a moment…FWIW
    Lori

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hiya Lori,

That’s awfully nice of you to say this – thank you so much my dear friend :)! I’d like to think you’re right as well but little extra motivators also help once in a while. But again – I think it’s the community we have here that entices people to be a part of it even more. To get to know each other and discuss things together as they learn from each other.

As for your reasons for why you comment on blogs – I’m with you 100%! I comment if the words have made an impact, if they’ve inspired me somehow and if and only IF I have something to add.

I think you’re also right in that although the comments mean a hell of a lot – it’s what and who’s behind each comment that counts even more!

So although you might not think I should thank you for leaving your wise words of wisdom here – I want to :)! I want to thank you for being the kind and intelligent woman that you are and for always adding on to the conversation with something meaningful.

Hope had a wonderful mother’s day Lori.
      Cheers

    • http://markharai.com Mark Harai

I agree wholeheartedly on your with your first point Lori : )

      • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

        Thank you Mark! :)
I would have to say the exact same thing for you my friend!

  • http://spinsucks.com Gini Dietrich

HAHAHAHAHA! Those damn spammers. That’s hilarious! And yet, Mufasa killed them all. Forty comments?! Seriously? That’s like six every blog post. Marcus, dude! Get a job!!

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      LMAO! :)
Mufasa annihilated the hell out of those spammers – and seriously these little suckers are pretty good – actually – there’s a new one on this post from the nursery in manchester whatever!

Alright Aunt Gini – you and I are always gonna’ have different counts on anything involving numbers hehe.
6 comments per post would mean that I wrote less than 7 posts in April – when in fact I wrote a measly 9! So my friendly stalker Mufasa is averaging 4 point something comments per post :) hahaha. I’m sorry my VBFF – I couldn’t resist ;).

      Enjoy the day.
      TTYL

        • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

That must be it! Phewwwww….finally we agree hahaha!

  • http://blog.esimplestudios.com Gabriele Maidecchi

That’s the best “love” post for your own community I have ever read. I can really see how much you value interaction and engagement among visitors of your blog, I think like you that people taking the time to post their “2 cents” on your topic deserve more than a “thank you” reply. Truly amazing :)

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hey Gabriele,

WOW thanks so much for what you said here :). I really appreciate the kind words an support. And yes – I do value this community and the discussions that go on very much. And I also do my best to reply in kind whenever possible. When someone has left a meaningful comment – I will address it in a way that I deem appropriate and put some thought into it myself. Just the way I see it I guess. It might be time consuming but it shows appreciation towards the folks who stop by to share their thoughts.

Thanks again for your continued interaction here. Always a pleasure.
      Cheers

Griddy! Way to go for mentioning me, I bestow upon you…a brownie point! Congratulations, you’ve earned it 😉

Seriously, a brilliant idea here, and I’m honoured that you’d ‘follow on’ from my post. I’ve had a lot of amazing comments on my post, which is now the most-commented of UTD, and for you to reference it is, well, mind-blowing. Thanks Griddy!

This post has also inspired me to hire a team of commenting monkeys who can boost my rankings and get me to the top! Or at least, get me onto the chart in the first place 😉

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

Okay – I’m not quite sure how I missed this comment Stu but I do sincerely apologize :(. I also have been having a little mishap with my nittigriddy email in that everything is going to junk for some reason Grrrr……

First off – thank you for the brownie point ;). Although I have to tell you that an actual brownie would have made my day as well since I’m a big lover of those haha. Oh, and the outside batch – you know – the one with the most crust lol ;).

Your post was fantastic and I couldn’t but mention it as it was also directly related to what I was saying here.

I’m so happy for you that your post got so much attention as it truly deserved to be noticed by as many folks as possible. People should know what commenting is all about – in that it’s not about commenting – it’s about conversing and building relationships that are based on mutual trust and respect – and of course learning!

As for the team of monkeys haha – that’s just a fabulous idea though I would recommend clones instead. I have two of them but @ginidietrich:twitter has 3 and her’s work around the clock – it’s truly incredible what they do lol.

But of course – Mufasa managed to get mark his territory in this jungle of friends first :).

Thanks so much for dropping Stu and once again – I’m so sorry for replying to you so late. My bad entirely and I have no good excuse so I won’t make up one. Like I’ve often said – I don’t do bullshit ;).

Have a great week my friend.

    I want your stalkers Griddy!!

Seriously, you have the most frickin’ awesome community girly! But of course that’s a testament to your endearing charm and amazing relationship-building skills. ALL bloggers could learn quite a few things from you – I know I’m certainly drinking from this fountain of knowledge. I mean, before reading your blog I NEVER spent this much time perusing the comments sections. But as you’ve mentioned, that is truly where the gold is, especially here.

This is the best of blogging worlds my dear lady – it’s a party AND an education (and it seems I like writing in all-caps as much as Davina likes using acronyms! :-))

Anyway Miss Ingrid, YOU rock (but you already knew that didn’t you?) and the graciousness of this post and your awards is just another reason to admire your style.
Now excuse me while I go plan my strategy for getting to the top of your list for the next go-round! 😉

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      LOL Tisha :)!

There are so many levels as to how I loved that comment of yours. A part of me wants to take a snapshot and blow it up to use as a poster. Heck, maybe I should do that one day – blow my favorite comments and decorate the walls of a room with them hahaha.

Thank you 10x for all the amazing compliments you threw my way. I’m very humbled and flattered that you think so highly of this community. But in all honesty – its folks like you and others who make this fabulous online version of a smart “central perk” what it is. I also love that people feel at home here – that they can say what they want and be serious or funny whenever they feel like it. It’s all part of the relationship building – after all – that’s what discussions are made of.

I’m glad you take more time to go through comments now – cause I really meant what I said. You will often learn so much more from the different points of views of people who drop by to share and converse. There’s tons of golden nuggets to be found around the blogosphere if we’re willing to go that extra little step.

Whether I know that I rock or not – doesn’t really matter – cause I still love hearing it and it still does the trick as an ego-booster :) hehe. So thank you for that as well.

Best of luck with your strategy – I’m looking forward to seeing your attack lol!
A pleasure to have you as a part of this community Tisha.

      Have a lovely evening.
      Cheers

You’re making me smile Miss Ingrid. It’s becoming a habit. I like it. That is all. (Well, that plus this goofy grin :-D)

  • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

You are too nice my dear G, but what’s a Lion going to do?? Truth be told, I don’t see this area of your blog as the ‘comment’ section. To me, a comment is one-way. I think the new phrase needs to be ‘chat room’, because that’s what I come here to do— Read wonderful and thought-provoking prose and then chat about it with my friends (one very close one in particular) afterward. It’s the ultimate communal experience here Griddy and you’re the facilitator. So if I could heap all this praise back on you I would, but at least everyone over there at Stuart’s post agreed you were the queen of commenting throughout the entire blogsphere. :-)

    Big Smiles,

    Mufasa

    • http://www.3hatscommunications.com/blog/ davinabrewer

Chat room huh? Funny Marcus, it’s a style choice I think. I am sure there are some bloggers who have good blogs and do engage in comments, but would prefer to limit the ‘chat’ and the OT and the back-and-forth between the different commenters and would say ‘take it outside.’ IDK.. I think the chat is where people let go, when they tell you what they really think. Plus it’s fun.

      • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

Hey, I believe you met one of those bloggers right? Ummm….1000 CHARACTERS! Grump and Grrr…. 😉

        • http://www.3hatscommunications.com/blog/ davinabrewer

Hee.. and seen the ‘take it your own blog’ remark too. At first I thought.. maybe this person was joking but then realized, not so much. Again it’s a style choice for an image and goals for a blog.. I just roll a little differently.

          • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

            WOW!

I mean – as long as the comments and discussions amongst folks are polite and respectful than I would hope everyone wants them to occur on THEIR blog. Oh well…Sigh

            • http://www.3hatscommunications.com/blog/ davinabrewer

I do get it to some extent, we have a total BLAST rocking the comment thread over at Spin Sucks but we do go way off topic sometimes. If a comment system isn’t set up for that or the host can’t moderate I can understand a little. Like you I don’t mind hosting the party but .. Different strokes, I guess.

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      M!!!
I think I’m going to be thanking you for the rest of my life for all that you say and do!! 😉
As for Stu’s post – I read all the comments and I can’t tell you how touched I was with what a few people said – including you and John and a few others folks! You guys are too much – you’re amazing!

Oh, and I was telling Dino that it’s kinda like Central Perk here – for intelligent and like-minded folks who like to mingle and learn from each other :).

Thanks so much M. I won’t apologize for being late in replying or I’m afraid I’ll get yelled at. So I’m gonna assume I’m forgiven haha.

Big smiles right back at ya Mufasa.
      Ciao

  • http://twitter.com/janesheeba Jane Sheeba

Rewarding commenters is a great way to get more comments. But more importantly I think those top commenters deserve a mention because a blog is made of 70% content from the blogger and 30% from comments. Comments draw traffic, stand as social proof, act as seeds to new blog post ideas and expands the topic of the original post. Congrats to the toppers.

    Jane.

    • http://www.3hatscommunications.com/blog/ davinabrewer

There are blogs and/or posts that might reverse those numbers. I’ve seen some amazing discussions that really take a post and make it so much more; times I couldn’t enter the fray, just reblogged it and applauded the collective efforts. It’s one of the most amazing things about some communities: the thought and effort people put into their comments, no one holding back the good stuff for their own blogs.

I remember one e-zine/blog article, off topic from my usual and yet, I could not stop reading. The comments were unreal, some insane or silly or mean but most of the people really took the time to read between the lines on the post, offer something new. Then they kept it going, reading and replying to each other. I didn’t comment but like I said, I was impressed reading the discussion. FWIW.

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hey Jane,

I’m a bit late in replying to you and a few people here :(. My bad and I apologize to keep you waiting.

You’re right in that rewarding commenters is a great way to get more of them – but I think replying to them in kind is what makes want to come back generally – and of course attract new ones. And in all honesty – it’s not so much about the numbers but as much as it is about the quality of them – what they bring – how they add on to the conversation and how they play with others ;).

As for the percentage you gave – in my case, I would even make it a 60/40 or even a 50/50 at times. Writing the post is the easy part – it’s replying to each person and taking the time to learn a little more about them and from them that makes the difference. But you’re absolutely right in that they do stand as social proof in some ways. But I often see incredible posts with tons of insight with only a few a comments or a ridiculous non-sense post with 200 comments. I guess that’s just the way it is. But it’s indeed nice to see an author rewarded by the engagement and interest of others.

Great to have you here Jane.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Hope to see you around these parts more often.

      Cheers

Well Dino – you’re getting a few points here for just mentioning my favorite show to date! Actually, when you wrote this comment – I was probably watching an episode of Friends in my desperate attempt to fall asleep haha.

I’m taking that as a great compliment – and yes, nittyGriddy is much like Monica’s apartment or even Central Perk ;).

As for the cooking – ummm….call me Rachel haha. I’m slightly challenged in that department.

Thanks for that kick-ass analogy Dino :). Loved it!

Glad I have a spam filter. I just need to get more comments! So far Livefyre is helping in that way a little bit, but I can only sit back and watch the comments on Gini’s blog in amazement!

    • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

I agree Ken, Gini’s blog is one of a kind. For as much content as she puts out, to still get that many comments, she must have of all in a trance!

      • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

True dat! Okay, I’m off to Gini’s now hahaha.

    • http://www.3hatscommunications.com/blog/ davinabrewer

It’s party-time there for sure, a lot of us having to get in that last word so with the Livefyre, it never ends. 😉

      • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

Ha! Seriously – it’s always happy hour at Gini’s house ;). And you’re right about getting in that last word lol.

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hey Ken,

I use G.A.S.P and generally it’s very good at annihilating the grand majority of spam – but these two little suckers are smart and sneaky – there comments almost make sense – ALMOST haha! Actually – one of them just letf another comment on this post. I’m leaving for proof now hahaha but will of course shove it in spam at some point.

As for Gini’s community – there’s not much I can say about that except WOW plus a little hat tip to her!

Livefyre has been great I’m sure – as the system does have some extra perks – but I’d like to give the big majority of the credit to Gini, her team and the overall content ;).

      Cheers

  • http://www.logallot.com Sonia

I think that is why I love the spam filter so much. You know when I comment, I really put some frickin thought into what I am saying because if the post was compelling enough it’s the least a person can do is to really say what you mean and mean what you say! You know? Not only that its great to have the author of the blog give some love back and highlight them as well, because everyone can use a little spot light love.

When I started blogging with my own blog, I sat back and read mostly, just learning my craft and what the hell I needed to do to get going when I saw how crucial commenting on other blogs was. The instant feedback you get is priceless and the bullshit “fly by night” comments get the delete button as fast as they tried to spam my ass. FAIL!

I can tell when people actually read my post and when they just skimmed through it, as if I am forcing their ass to read my post. I am blessed to have some great comments left by some kick-ass bloggers and what they feed me is beneficial to me and my readers. You know me girl, always got a tell it straight!

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

Oh crap! I’m not sure how I missed replying to you here Sonia – but it seems that I did and I’m really, really sorry about that :(. I’m sure I have a ton of great excuses for ya but I’d rather not use them and instead simply to tell you that I will be standing in the corner, face down thinking about what I did and then writing “I’m sorry” 10 times on the blackboard lol ;).

You know – I don’t know how those little buggers got through – but they are sneaky actually and of course rather smart. I use G.A.S.P. and not Akismet and I can tell you that it’s pretty darn good at catching everything usually.

As for commenting – this particular response might not be the best example of that since you have waited a bit – but as I’m sure you know – I do believe in replying in kind to meaningful and thoughtful comments. It’s just like having a real life conversation. If the person in front of you is talking to you and telling you their story or thought on something you just said – how often would you simply reply – “okay, thanks”? I mean seriously!

I’ll be honest in saying that I don’t delete the little drive-by comments – as long as I know they’re not spam or anything – but like I said – I reply in kind. So don’t expect more than a polite “thank you” or “cheers” or something of the sort.

When I started blogging – I had no clue in general – nor of why people commented or why they were so important for both author and commenter. I honestly commented back then because the article had interested me and that’s the exact same reason I still do. The first time and many times after that – that I commented on a blog – I still had no clue of the power of comments. Really – nothing! I just thought you comment and that’s it. Heck – I don’t even think I wanted to leave my real name – but I did lol.

And yes – you can often tell when someone’s read your post and when they simply skimmed it or haven’t at all. In all honesty – I would be worried to comment had I not read or thoroughly skimmed a post. I mean – what on earth do you write except for the “good job’s and I agree and blah blah”?

Anyhow – it seems I’ve “mused” enough haha. Once again – I do appreciate you being so patient here and if you silently cussed at me at some point – totally cool, I understand lol :-)!

Awesome of you to have chipped in here. And of course I do always love hearing folks tell it like it is :).

      Have a great Thursday.
      Cheers

OK, Mufasa and Davina should be ready, cause the battle is coming 😛 I am gonna catch up with them.

I think it is very, very mean that you are raising the medal limit again :( I want my medaaaaaaaal back :)

Anyway, love this, you are so right and of course you made the list with people who you want to comment on your blog. Although I don’t agree completely with that list, it is pretty good.

Hey, do you delete those comments by the spammers, can you do it in Disqus???

    • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

Sorry Bran, but in cased you didn’t already know it, the Lion is the king of Griddy’s jungle, so striving for a silver metal should be your goal my dear :))))

      • http://live-your-love.com/ Brankica U

Lions have one natural enemy …. that carries a gun…. called a hunter…..

        • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

Pffft, I hear ya Elmer Fudd!! 😉

          • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

            Elmer Fudd! Hahahaha!
He’s so cute too – poor guy.

        • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

          LMAO!!!

      • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

I wish you guys were actually saying these things out loud – I think I would definitely record you hahaha. I love it when the lion and the hunter go at it hehe.

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

And this comment is exactly why I couldn’t but mention you in the post hahaha!
I had to raise the medal Monkey – you guys are making it look so easy haha. At this rate, I may just have to raise it a little more again next month ;).

I would have to say that I agree with the list – and I meant that for the people that I know that are on there – cause there are a few that I’m not familiar with yet so I wouldn’t know. I failed to emphasize that in the post – of course – there are several others that I would have added to that list as well – cough and cough! ahaha

You can delete the comments – but I thought it would be funny to just leave them and have them included in the snapshot of the top 20. And one of them just came back on this post – damn them! I’m gonna’ delete it tomorrow though. How to they get through man? Grr….

Thanks for kicking ass Bran. You rock!
      Cheers

Holy crap, 29 comments really? Sweet! That’s 100% credit to you and your community.. keeps the conversation lively and fun, always makes me want to come back and visit.

Totally agree with your praise of Marcus, he works as hard as our friends Gini and Danny and Mark, so many others. I love comments, the discussions. My theme does not allow these widgets, wish it did so I could recognize those who support my blog (except for the spammers). Another widget I loved was the “Backtype Connect/My Comments Elsewhere” so people could always see what blogs I was really reading, not just tweeting.. another way to show some love to a few blogs.

As for the kind words about me, IDKWTS. I mean really.. WOW. And AFAIR yes we did meet via Gini’s blog. Thank goodness! Likening me to the Queen of the bitch slap, that is high praise indeed. TKU4UK. Ok, was that enough acronyms? BTW I’ve been working on a little award for you too my dear, NOW I have to finish it!

Off to read Stuart’s post now. And hire some ghost commenters, so I can beat Marcus next time. 😉 FWIW.

    • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

Love it Davina. But tell me, is it sad that I heap praise upon myself when I’m reading your comments and can immediatley figure out the acronym? It’s my guilty pleasure I guess 😉 Thanks for the new-age linguistic education lady!! :-)

      • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

Hey – I figured them all out there as well woohoooo! I’m so proud of me – I didn’t need the online dic this time :). Okay fine – just for AFAIR – but I’m still trying to guess it before I cave hahaha.

        • http://www.3hatscommunications.com/blog/ davinabrewer

I use the online dictionary, just to try to stump you guys. 😉

          • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

I just figured – heck – I won’t be embarrassed – I will ask you directly what one of them means haha ;).

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

Well hello there FS 2 😉

Yup 29 indeed!! Pretty cool eh? But the credit goes to all of you who take the time to engage and create lively and smart discussions. So thank you for making this community the awesome place that it is.

I’m not familiar with the widget you mentioned – I will have to check it out – thanks for bringing it to my attention. Although I think if I add another plugin or widget to this site it may just explode haha.

Your rants as well as your non-ranty posts my dear Davina are well worth the praise – and I’m actually a big fan of Erika’s so I really meant that in a good/great way :).

And award for me? Heck, I’m kinda nervous, scared and excited all at the same time hahaha. Not quite sure what to say – but you bet your bottom dollar that I’m curious as hell now ;).

Ghost commenters!!! Damn, why didn’t I think of that? Nice Davina, very nice! 😉

Have a great evening and thanks for all that you do here and elsewhere.
      Cheers

The widget is gone as BT doesn’t track the comments anymore, shame. It’s one thing I like about Disqus and Livefyre, they both do. Just a cool idea for a plugin to take that info and put on your blog, so readers can see that you really DO read and comment on other posts. Good if you want to stalk someone I guess.

Oh, I like a good rant. Something about being fired up or a little emotional, we let the pretenses down and really get down to well, the nitty gritty now don’t we? I don’t always agree with Erika, but do like her writing and respect her for taking a side.

Your award is a work in progress, trust me.. you’ll like it if I can get it finished. Have a good night Ingrid.

Commenting has definitely been a hot topic lately. I wrote a post about it last week after reading and being inspired by a post by Paul Wolfe. When I started my blog 3 months ago, the best advice I received was to start reading and commenting on great blogs. Like you, I love, love, love following and participating in the interesting discussions in the comments. You always set the bar very high for awesome comments. But Marcus and Davina are indeed worthy of the honor you have bestowed upon them!

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hi Marianne,

Nice to see you here :).
I think I know exactly which of Paul Wolfe’s posts inspired you – as it was indeed a great write-up on his part – much like most of what he writes.

I wish I had gotten the same advice as you my dear – but alas…the only advice I got when I started blogging and still had no clue to what it was all about – was from people who knew even less than me – who said I should be writing 3 to 4 posts a day lol.

Thanks a lot for the kind words about my comments :). I do try to make them meaningful in some way and you’re very right about Marcus and Davina. It’s really no surprise that these 2 peeps are in the top 10 list here :).

      Wishing you a great day.
      Cheers

PS – will make sure to stop by at some point and your take and rookie’s guide on comments over at your blog :).
