8 Reasons You Should Never Quit Writing, Blogging, and Believing

Editor’s Note: As a few of you might already know – I’m currently travelling and on vacation :). Actually, I have been for the last week in case my online absence didn’t give it away already. I’d tell you all about and where but then you’d dislike me a little more so let’s just say it’s sunny, sometimes windy and the sea is as blue as they come.

During my absence I asked my very good friend Mufasa if he’d honor my community and I with a guest post (the first ever on this blog) and lucky for me he said YES :D! In true nittyGriddy style, please join me in welcoming Marcus Sheridan from The Sales Lion and his fantastic article on why you should never quit writing, blogging and believing.

If you don’t follow him already, then head over to Twitter right now and stalk the crap out of that lion. His roar is a friendly and gentle one and you’re sure to love him, his amazing blog and the incredibly engaging community that he’s built.

Marcus Sheridan aka Mufasa 8 Reasons You Should Never Quit Writing, Blogging, and Believing

Mufasa the Mane Man!

Something very interesting happened on my blog a few days ago that made Griddy and I raise an eyebrow. Basically, one of our very good friends in the blogosphere, Mark Harai, openly discussed his decision to stop blogging. Much to our surprise, Griddy, me, and many others chimed in, showing Mark our support and letting him know how much we appreciated his past writings.

But as I thought about Mark’s decision to quit/take a break (which is mainly due to what he feels is his inability to produce as much great content as other bloggers), I began to ponder all of the wonderful benefits to blogging that we often times overlook, likely because ideas of ‘fame, fortune, or ‘world dominance’ (not in Mark’s case though) cloud our perspective. So without further ado, here are my thoughts, and I very much look forward to hearing yours below.

8 Reasons You Should Never Quit Writing, Blogging, and Believing

1. A Diary of Your Life

Most folks don’t keep journals these days, which is really a shame, because they can tell a person, and their posterity, a heck of a lot. But for those bloggers that actually integrate personal ‘stuff’ into their writings, their blog in many ways becomes an ongoing journal of their life, one that will be treasured down the road as a history piece to look back on and enjoy.

During my many months of blogging, I’ve written many, many articles that discussed my family, especially my 4 children—like  the time I built a sandcastle with my 4 year old or the experience I had with my oldest daughter coming back from an all-star baseball game. Without question, all of these stories will be treasured by our family for many, many generations.

2. Forced Cognition

Have you ever had a problem and the minute you sat down to write about your thoughts the answer you were looking for just came? For many writers, this is a common occurrence, and it really stems from the fact that the brain is like any muscle, and at times needs to be activated. But once it has been ‘turned on’, great inspiration and ideas can follow. This is also why some of my greatest ideas in business and in life have come as I was sitting in front of my monitor, slapping away at the keys, only to have an unexpected idea bolt into my head, just waiting to be made a reality.

 3. Enhanced Writing

Raise your hand if you’d like to be a better writer? <Pause here, I’m counting everyone’s hands> Yep, looks like it’s unanimous, we ALL want to be better writers. But as our fellow blogger Paul Wolfe often says, the only way you get better at writing is, well, writing…

I don’t know about you, but when I look back on my original posts from 20 months ago, I find myself cringing at my writing style, but at the same rate, it’s quite rewarding to know I’ve improved quite a bit since those initial days. That’s the beauty of blogging. Yes, for most folks, the writing is tough at first, but without question it gets easier and easier—and more enjoyable too!

 4. Relationships

Some of my best friends in the world have been formed online. I really had no idea this would be the case when I started blogging, but it’s only a natural result of reading someone’s constant thoughts, mutually supporting each other’s works, and maybe even meeting in person—as I did with Aunt Gini and Uncle John in Blog World New York a few months ago. (Griddy was supposed to come too, but claimed to be ‘too busy’ when the date finally came. Griddy busy??? Yeah, right! 😉 )

5. Virtual Resume

Within the next few years, resumes as we currently know them will essentially be extinct—and well they should be, because they’re antiquated and inapplicable when it comes to showing actual performance in the 21st century. This being said, recruiters and business owners in the future will be hiring more and more based on ‘actual works’. In other words, instead of listening to a potential employee talk about how much they know about ‘their field’, candidates will be forced to ‘show’ their works, and if someone has a blog which is essentially a platform for the world to see how they think and what they know, they’ll have all the advantage when it comes to the hiring process.

6. Discipline

Who can’t use a little more discipline in their lives? I think most of us will answer in the affirmative to that question and I can personally attest to the fact that I’m a way more disciplined individual now than I was 2 years ago when I started blogging. Having set posting schedules, working until late in the night, and nurturing community are clearly activities that require quite a bit of good ‘ol discipline—and there’s no way around it.

7. The Things You’ll Learn About You

There is something absolutely powerful about putting our thoughts to pen (or in this case, keyboard) over the course of months and months. As we do this, we learn more about ourselves, our strengths, and our weakness than we would with just about any other activity. We also confront issues that we may never have otherwise dealt with nor discussed. This is the power of blogging, and it’s certainly real as it gets.

 8. You Will Change Lives

If you’ve been blogging for a while, there is a very good chance you have touched and change lives—the majority of which you’ll never even know. I’m always amazed when I get an email from someone explaining how they’ve been reading my blog for a long time and that it has greatly impacted their life (even though I’ve never even seen the person in the comments section or received contact from them previously). It’s moments like these that make all the hard work, long hours, and sleep-lacking nights well worth it.

So there are my top 8 reasons why we should keep blogging despite our perceived lack of ‘success’. I’ve intentionally left out a few other thoughts that came to mind because I wanted to leave room for Griddy’s awesome community (that’d be you guys) to share all your great reasons as well. So c’mon and jump in everyone, let’s see what else we can come up with.

Did you like this post? If so, then please subscribe to my blog and join one of the best communities on the web (next to Griddy’s of course 😉 ) (Editor’s note: Awwww, thanks M. I would say Mufasa’s community rocks, roars and then some!)

i have not blogged for the past 6 months. i was on a pretty long break . it so happened that i kind of moved on. i love writing blogs. i loved this article. i would really love to add a point , blogging is not just a chain of memories, achievements or a virtual resume its also the thing that inspires you that you have potential to do things. when i started blogging i was in a pretty bad state, i was feeling weak. a friend of mine has a website and he asked me to write a article for him. i did write it, i was not sure if it was good. slowly i got used to blogging. he loved it, his readers loved it. i was happy. i became confident enough to do many things. take bigger risks. move out of the shell i was hiding in for years.

talking about the quality of posts. when you start you make mistakes. mistakes teach us many lessons, we become aware of our mistakes and keep correcting them. slowly quality of the posts increases. quality is also dependent on your interest and commitment to your blog.

While I love this list – and think it is spot-on – point #8 is my personal favorite.  I have read some very well written blogs on certain topics that truly inspired me to act upon my instincts, therefore enabling me to gain a bit of success.  If I may add one more:  you should never quit writing as it is an outlet to express your feelings, emotions, etc at the given time.

    Marcus,

Clearly, I’m late in arrival as I’ve been in a on again off again cycle of interacting with the blogoshpere as of late. Apple seriously needs to stop fooling around and develop an APP for creating more hours in the day. Most capitalized company in the world? What good is that if you can’t create the change necessary to affect people’s lives in a positive way? Create a 28 hour day for me Apple, or my investment dollars are seeking alternative assets.

I digress. I find #2 to be spot on, but such is the case with most activities. Like attracts like. When I get into a sales rhythm, I feel like closing each subsequent sale comes a little easier. When I’m in an exercise frenzy, I find it less and less difficult to make time for the gym. But where those examples are narrow in scope, I find my interaction on the blogoshpere, especially contributing to my own, to force me into a broader encompassing period of self-improvement. I attribute it to not just “forced cognition”, although I do find it a stimulative mental exercise (writing and contributing on blogs), but also because I open myself up once again to the communities out here. I surround myself with like minded individuals that genuinely care about my well-being without any vested interest save my success.

In the nearly 12 months that I have been hanging on this blog among others as well as blogging my own disjointed and often incoherent thoughts and ramblings, I find that I am most productive and as a result, most content, when I’m actively participating and contributing.

Thanks for sharing — and thanks to Griddy for allowing your wisdom to take up residence in a post over here.

    HI Marcus,
I remember a time about December, 2010, & I had been blogging since July, but I was really contemplating quitting.  One morning I woke up and checked Twitter.  Right there was an article by someone, I don’t remember, but it said, “So you’re thinking of quitting your blog. Read this first.”  It may have said ‘job’ instead of ‘blog’, but I saw ‘blog’.

Anyway, I went and read the article which was good, and waited to make my decision.  Well, that same night a fellow blogger called me to ask if she could use one of my posts on her site.  I knew then that I was to keep blogging.  At least for the time being.  I’ve been told by a few people that my writing has improved, and it wouldn’t have if I had quit.

So, I am so happy to read this post.  I love it!  Sally

I’ve been dealing with a few …messes and confusions (as you know!), but I’m so glad I read this one! OH No! (I’ll go over and read in a minute) What is this about Mark Harai not blogging?! I love his blogs! I adore him, he is so real and so cool! Mark was one of the first folks I met online to visit my blog and comment on it and talk to me on Face Book and Twitter… Just talk.

Marcus, The title of your post sums up everything. Everything. It is such a powerful and fun way to do (and be) such good, here, there and in the entire world. My children are my world, and if there is one thing I hope and dream for them, it would be to live in a beautiful world, living good and beautiful lives. My 12 year old son just built his first website! (it took him WAAAAY less time than it did me! LOL)

I can only add how much I have received in unmeasurable and even so much un-definable gifts from the folks I have met since February. Marcus, you are a good friend. Thank you for this post. ~Amber-Lee

    Oh My a Journey Fan!

OK you got me @MarcusSheridan:disqus . A post not geared towards me. See @Griddy:disqus not every blog post is something I can truly relate too.

Seriously I can not wait to stop writing and blogging LOL I just want to be a reader and commenter. Let you writer types take the lead and then I can be part of the support and underpinnings that helps give you a reason to keep writing, blogging and believing. I mean seriously think of how many of our friends blogs would of closed by now if I didn’t come by to cause trouble? And had that occurred the blogosphere would be filled with lame light weight reading like the brogans and mashables and mommy bloggers. There would be no intellectual fire…people pushing each other to their A game. It would be like beer league softball ya know.

But because of me this is the fast pitch league. Massive stadiums. Rousing chants and hooliganisms. Cities rocked during friendlies and not so friendlies. QB’s getting crushed and trophies paraded through downtowns with tickertape parades.

Yup can’t wait to stop writing and blogging. I have much too much pressure supporting everyone else to really focus on it. And hey….I have been told sacrifice is good. Take one for the team.

So yep this blogpost is not aimed at me. Thankfully because otherwise I would of had to step up with some grand amazing comment out of left field totally tying together all the other comments in one fell swoop.

    Marcus,

I am still relatively new to blogging but I have found amazing people while doing it.  I love the idea of teaching and learning at the same time!

A little of subject but still “micro blogging”.  You mentioned blogging as a journal, a record of your life.  Just a month ago my family and I went on vacation.  I took the usual photos and kept souvenirs but what I found fun was checking in everywhere on Facebook.  I gave fair warning to all my friends that I would be doing it as a way to keep track of where we went.  It wasn’t meant to be a bragging platform.  It was so much fun and now I have a mini journal of our adventures.

Fantastic list Marcus and I can relate to each and everything on it, even in little ways. I have a friend who likes to get my sometimes long-winded emails because of #2.. it makes her think to read them, as I’ve had to think to type them. I know for a fact I’ve learned more, become a better writer, communicator and professional since I started blogging. The relationships have been the greatest gift, truly. Since @47d58be98d1441a276245024c9457dbf:disqus and @johnfalchetto:disqus  want to add business, I think #5 is part of that. This goes hand in hand with what I’ve been on lately — the confidence issue, pedestals, and strategic goals. Blogging takes some extreme time, thinking and perseverance to keep on. The counsel and inspiration you give, Marcus (for the second day in a row!), are gems.

And, because we’re in Griddy’s house, gotta say something about that gal — You ROCK HOT, Griddy; no doubt about that.

    • http://twitter.com/NancyD68 Nancy Davis

      Hey Jayme,

I relate so much to Mark I may contact him and talk to him. I am going through my own confidence issues. Many days I do not feel smart enough, or not cool enough. Even though my content is very different, I tell myself I am just as good as anyone else.

Mark needs to give himself a break. I need to. I beat myself with a damn sledgehammer when what I need is a feather.

      • http://soulati.com/blog Soulati

Nancy, Girl. When did you begin on this path? You need one full year; no lie. Blogging each day or 3x/week absolute. The journey is fraught with depression, lack of esteem, lack of stacking up, confidence issues, and then one day, voila. It comes. I promise. Keep on keeping on. You can; we can!

        • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

Frame those words Jayme. Seriously well said.

        • http://twitter.com/NancyD68 Nancy Davis

Well that is just it. Many days I still feel like an outsider. The “class nerd” who gets to hang with the “cool kids” only by accident. I defintelty have moments of very low self esteem, and this month, having my job downgraded to ‘freelancer’ is one of those ‘gut-check” moments.

        • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

I couldn’t have said it better Jayme. We all go through ups and downs – and it’s friends like YOU and US that are here to support each other when we need it and even when we don’t! That’s what it’s all about.

      • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

Exactly Nancy. A feather. Much better choice of beating utensil. 😉

    • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

“Blogging takes some extreme time, thinking and perseverance to keep on.”—-how many people actually get that going in Jayme? I think if most really did understand the time investment up front, they’d likely run the other way as fast as they could….but then again, they wouldn’t experience the joyous side that comes with all this.

And good for you for having touched base with Mark. He’s a great guy, talented writer, and has so much to offer. It’s our job as a ‘community’ to buoy each other up when we experience our dips.

And like our friend Griddy, you rock too Jayme!!!

      Marcus

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

Thank you, thank you, thank you Jayme! :)) You just put a huge smile on my face!
And right back at ya my dear!

  • Erica Allison

    Hey Marcus!
Great to see you over here at Griddy’s place.  I can just picture her now, smiling from the beach at the awesome post and comments you’ve generated here…oh to be there with her! :)
I love your list, Marcus. Like @johnfalchetto:disqus , I would add a #9 and that’s for business, but I would also point out that if you do all 8, you’ll naturally get the business part.

I think #1 is most interesting because as a blogger and business owner, I used to censor myself re: posts that exposed too much about me or my family.  However, the more I did open up, the stronger the engagement from my community and the stronger my relationships have become as a result.  I think we all have a natural rhythm for sharing our personal stuff – some share more than others and some not much at all.  I think that’s perfect because each one of us is wired differently and I can always tell how “open” or “private” someone is by their blog posts and their comments in blogs.  Love that.

I also agree with @TheJackB:disqus in that if blogging becomes work, then it ceases to work for you. I miss it when I don’t get to write my posts, but I also happily take a break if I am just not feeling it.  To push on in that mindset would be a disservice to readers.  And I’m with you; I miss @Mark_Harai:twitter ‘s posts and miss seeing him around, but I also understand!

It is really a question of balance and if you do it effectively it becomes much easier.

When you find that elusive mystical creature aka ‘balance’ please let me know. 😉

I might, but then I might not. If I let go of him he might run away so there might not be any opportunity to release that sucker. 😉

Its like caching a fly. Are you gong to open your hand or just keep your fist closed?

            • http://www.thejackb.com/ The JackB

That is a great analogy. I like that.

    • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

Really kind words Erica, and I so appreciate what you’ve said here. Your comments on personal openness are quite astute. As you know, I love being personal. Like you said, I’m just wired that way. My blog is family driven—about me, my wife and kids, and my community of friends. I see it all as many pieces that make the whole, and it’s utterly enjoyable. I honestly can’t imagine writing any other way.

Thanks so much for stopping by though Erica, you’re an awesome gal, and I appreciate it.

      Marcus

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hey Erica,
Smiling…is exactly what I did when I read Mufasa’s post! Needless to say how much I loved it and how honored I was to feature my good friend here.

Hope you’re doing well my dear. Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts on this awesome piece.

      Cheers

Fantastic post and wonderful list! Like most folks, I started blogging to help me grow my business, but I didn’t realize all of the other benefits that would come with it.

I definitely think ideas spring to life when you write. I sometimes don’t know how I really feel about a subject until I start hammering away.  And once you get in the practice of writing, you have more ideas than time to write them (or at least I do!).

I think by far THE biggest benefit is the community that you can build if you do it right. Thanks to blogging and participating on other’s blogs, I’ve developed a number of fantastic relationships and have met many in person, such as @markwschaefer:twitter , @ericamallison:twitter , @soulati:twitter , @jennwhinnem:twitter  and many others. It’s been a real treat and has enriched my life in many ways.

    • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

You have such a contagious energy and enthusiasm Laura—from your avatar down to your words—and I just love it. :-)

Yes, meeting folk IRL has been such a pleasent surprise for me. Truly eye opening in all reality. These communities we build, and the relationships that come with them, are real. Nothing fake about them. And it’s awesome.

Thanks so much for your comment Laura!

      Marcus

      • http://www.flybluekite.com Laura Click

Well, thanks, Marcus. That means a lot. :)

And yes, all of this IS awesome. People who say this stuff isn’t real, don’t know what they’re missing!

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

I couldn’t agree more with what you said here Laura!
I started blogging because I love to write – but I had no clue of all the amazing things it would bring me or do for me. The friendships, the opportunities, the learning, the connections, the new ideas, the community…and so much more. It’s actually quite overwhelming but in a good way.

I actually wrote a piece about that a couple months ago called “What has blogging done for you?” – it was so great to see some of the answers and how much we all shared when it came to that.

Thanks so much for dropping by and sharing your thoughts here Laura. I hope to see you around these parts more often.

      Have a great week.
      Cheers

      • http://www.flybluekite.com Laura Click

You’re so right – blogging has so many benefits that you don’t even realize until you get started. I know I’ve certainly learned a lot! I think the trick is just sticking with it long enough to see the benefits. Too often, people quit blogging before they start to reap the rewards.

And yes, I’ll try to get by and say hello more, Ingrid! So much good content, so little time…. 😉

Hope you have a great week too! :)

  • http://www.unlockthedoor.net Stuart Mills

Oh dear, Griddy has officially opened the gates – I hope she slams them shut before I throw guest post after guest post at her 😉

Seriously, 8 solid reasons to blog, and 8 solid reasons to do anything creative to be honest. Community is a great boon in this game – just ask any successful blogger how they got to be where they are, and they’ll tell you who helped them get to where they are today. It’s the people!

It’s great to see you at another place other than The Sales Lion Marcus, you write amazingly well and I’d love to see you out and about writing for other blogs :-)

    • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

You’re too kind Stu, I really appreciate your words man. It’s fun to make visits in other houses on occasion. In fact, because my role at my swimming pool company is now changing, I’m going to have the opportunity to write much more, and hopefully I’ll get off my duff and make a few appearances in necks I’ve never visited.

Thanks for all mate, your magical words never cease to make a person smile. :)

      Marcus

Looks like you and I were thinking alike on this one.

    Hi Marcus,

I just got past my first year of blogging. Even though financially i have not achieved anything but i never thought about quitting. I am still finding it enjoyable. #4 relationships and #8 changing people’s lives are what keeping me motivated. Thanks for the reminder once again and my blog is definitely here to stay.

    • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

That’s so very inspiring Lye. You’ll never regret it brother, as you well know. Your an example too, whether you realize it or not. Great comment man. :)

  • http://www.findallanswers.com Jane | Find All Answers

To me, I’ve learned a lot about myself since I started blogging. More than money, fame and anything else, it is this that I really enjoy about blogging. So I won’t be quitting :)

Ah…money from blogging! Ultimate joy! :)

      • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

Great point Jane. There are folks out that have more money and fame than entire cities, yet when they look in the mirror, they don’t know what the heck they see. So glad you brought this up Jane. :)

      Cheers,

Marcus, You got me at reason #1… and every single point after enforced that I really should start blogging. Thanks for this post!

    • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

You certainly should Crister, and when I say it will change your life, I really mean it. And after seeing your GP on Gini’s, no time is better than right now. :)))

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

Marcus did a heck of a job with this post :). If this doesn’t convince us to start blogging if we don’t or continue if we do – then I don’t know what will.

Best of luck to you Crister. Thanks for dropping by.
      Cheers

  • Robin

I couldn’t agree more with all 8 of your reasons.  For me blogging has given me an outlet to overcome my frustrations at work and turn what could be a negative situation into a teaching moment.  Thank you for reminding me why I do it.

    • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

So glad you have found an outlet in blogging Robin. It can certainly bring perspective to a world of frustration.

      Cheers!

So many reasons. I relate to that first point so well Marcus. That cute little post about my son that I wrote in ten minutes with tears in my eyes is still one of my favorites. It made my dear Ms. Gini cry even.

I blog because if I don’t I would be the one missing out. I would be missing out on all of you.

I blog so that I can be helpful to others who have had hard times. So many good reasons to blog. I also blog for my day job as well. I need to move the needle and get my bosses on track with what online engagement really looks like

    • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

You’re so dang awesome Nancy. Seriously, you in many ways are the essence of what blogging is all about. It’s a pleasure to know you lady. :-)

I appreciate that Marcus. I don’t think you know how much. 😉

  • http://twitter.com/MARLdblE Marlee Ward

I appreciate all of the things you’ve shared here, @MarcusSheridan:disqus . My pick is 8. My blog is my way to share my gifts to the world and I think it would be a disservice to not find a way to do that. The other favorite part of this post for me was @nittygriddyblog:twitter ‘s photo caption (Mane Man), lol. Too cute, Ingrid. :)

    • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

Hahahah Marlee, yeah, Griddy’s got more nicknames for me than I’ve got whiskers 😉

But yes, if you’re not blogging Marlee, you’re selling yourself, and the world, pretty dang short…and what a rip-off that would be!!

Good to see you on here girl, really appreciate your words.

LOL! Glad you liked that one Marlee ;).

  • http://www.logallot.com Sonia

This post definitely hits home with me when it comes to why I keep blogging. My friends always ask are you making any money with it and I start laughing because I never started out with that actually in mind. From the time I started, till now, it has changed allot from what I was going through in my life personally and the direction I am going presently.

Blogging has so many different meanings to people and they do it for one reason or the other. I know starting out I had no clue the relationships and growth that I would see within myself as this is the “fuel” that keeps me in the game. You made a great point about blogging being a “virutal” resume for yourself. I have heard from some of my colleagues how some recruiters are looking online to see if you have personal blogs and any of other kind of online presence to gauge more about you, rather then the lip service you would give them in an interview. Whether it’s true or not, your blog is your own extension of your thoughts, feelings and creativity. Craft it well because you never know who else is watching.

Nevertheless, I love the friendships I have built blogging and the connections that I made over the last year.  We can all learn allot from each other with our personal struggles, how we write and the content provided for everyone to enjoy.  Great stuff Marcus!

    • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

Hey Sonia, thanks so much for this, and what a great comment. Sounds like you truly ‘get it’, and have seen first hand the impact blogging can have on one’s life.

To new friendships and continued learning Sonia!

      Marcus

Thank you Marcus I really appreciate that! You Rule Brother! Next to JK of course. My Bay Area Brother!

  • http://www.expatlifecoach.com/blog John Falchetto

Great to read you here. Which reminds me I owe @nittygriddyBlog:twitter a guest post. Better get to work.

Your top 8 are the reason I also blog. Obviously there is also a business reason behind and that would be #9. But #7 is what it really brought to me. The discipline of writing everyday (though not posting) has given me so much.
Thanks for being a mentor along that journey buddy.

    • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

The mentorship is a mutual one my friend. :-) Thanks for all brother.

  • http://twitter.com/tomewer Tom Ewer

Hi Marcus; good to see you over here! I really enjoyed this article – it puts blogging in a light that I had not really considered.

Ultimately, blogging should be more than just a way to make a living (if that is what are trying to do), because if you don’t enjoy it, then isn’t it just another job? It being more than just a means to an end (whether it be as a quasi-journal, a way to meet new people, or something else) can be really important in the long run.

    • http://www.thejackb.com/ The JackB

If you don’t enjoy blogging than you probably won’t last. It is too much work, unless you enjoy it in which case it is loads of fun.

    • http://www.thejackb.com/ The JackB

      • http://twitter.com/NancyD68 Nancy Davis

Blogging for myself is not work at all. Doing posts about keywords and stuff like that – to me that is work and it can drain you.

        • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

To me – blogging is work – but it’s work that I love and that I look forward to – its pleasant and it enriches my life – so in a sense although it might be work – I don’t consider it as the everyday tedious kind that we do to survive. Does that make sense? Or did I contradict myself?

    • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

Yes, very good point Tom. There is no way I’d be sitting here at 1am in the morning if I didn’t love this thing we call blogging. :-) We talk about passion, and some people think it’s not so important, I say those folks are on crack—-passion carries the day.

      Thanks again my friend,

      Marcus

  • http://hajrak.blogspot.com Hajra

    Hey Lion,

Great to see you here! Loved the post. I actually got a freelance writing job because of my personal blog! Also, one reader was kind enough to send me a mail saying that she finds my post relaxing and I should be writing more often for here…yes, I am blowing my own horns but feedback like that just emphasizes the power a person’s thought can have..and also, the power of fingers for effective typing.

Also, the sense of community is awesome and overwhelming at times. Recently, I was missing from the online world for a few days due to a new job and Bill Dorman was kind enough to send me a message wondering where I was! That is the connection, and it makes one feel awesome that people you haven’t met even once, live miles across the other end of the world actually care!
I am never giving up blogging, and thanks to your 8 motivating points, I am staying on longer!

Great to have you here! Have a lovely day :)

    • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

You got a job Hajra from your personal blog?!! Ha, that’s so awesome and fitting!!! And yes, community is so amazing. Folks like Bill Dorman are dang awesome and truly care—stuff that goes a long ways on and offline.

So glad you enjoyed this Hajra and that you’re determined to keep writing and believing!! :-)

      Marcus

Congratulations Hajra! You’ve achieved something that I hope to achieve one day :-)

      • http://hajrak.blogspot.com Hajra

Thanks Stuart! You will definitely! Why don’t you try the Problogger job board, some amazing writing jobs there.

        • http://www.unlockthedoor.net Stuart Mills

Now there’s a thought Hajra, thanks for letting me know :-)

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

I know exactly what you mean – it’s incredible how people notice your absence and are kind enough to take the time to ask about you and make sure if everything is okay. As for @billdorman:disqus – he’s very thoughtful like that and just a wonderful all round guy!

Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts here Hajra. Always a pleasure to see you my dear.

      Cheers

  • http://www.thejackb.com/ The JackB

    Marcus,

You are making me nervous because your list is almost identical to mine. If I start talking with a drawl and singing I had the Time of My Life I might have to get checked out to see if we have some sort of mind meld going on. 😉

As a father my blog is a treasure chest of memories of things that my children have said/done and the experiences we have had. You know how fast these kids grow- it is really hard to remember all that we want to so the blog is perfect for that.

If you are uncertain about a situation or your thoughts/feelings regarding it than writing is a great way to provide clarification. When you put pen to paper you very quickly begin to see what you think/feel/believe about whatever it is. Writing has helped me through some very tough spots.

Blogging builds relationships and there is tremendous value in that. I am a firm believer in using the blog to build community and that is something that offers far more benefits than words can describe.

    • http://www.thesaleslion.com/ Marcus Sheridan,The Sales Lion

Well said @TheJackB:disqus , and yes, it does appears we’re cut from the exact same cloth. But I think you and I, with our families, job and children, are in many ways in a very similar boat– confronted each day with similar challenges and triumphs.

Your kids will certainly look back with a smile brother. And I hope mine will too. Great stuff bud.

      Marcus

      • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

Mufasa – need I tell you how honored and happy I am that you agreed to guest post for me? Okay good – didn’t think so haha!

Seriously – I loved this post and you nailed every point here. This is one of those posts that I wish I had written myself my dear friend. I’m sorry that I wasn’t able to answer more comments with you but I’m trying to catch up now as I just returned.

Numbers 4, 5, 6 and 7 are huge for me – not to say that the others aren’t but these in particular are ones that really marked me.

The relationships I’ve built because of this blog are truly incredible. Had I not started nittyGriddy, I might have never met amazing people like you @ginidietrich:disqus @johnfalchetto:disqus @dannybrown:disqus  and so many more! I’d need an entire page to name them so I’m gonna assume they know who they are!

As for discipline – although I don’t have a self imposed scheduled I do have a few regular posts per week which I do my damn hardest to publish on time. Sometimes I fail – but most times they’re there!

As for the virtual resume side of it – it’s pretty crazy how many times I’ve been contacted for free lance jobs or inquiries about certain things. Some work out and some don’t but it sure helps get your name out there and serves as a good reference for the quality of work and writing as well as our knowledge base.

Anyhow – all that to say – this was an awesome piece and I’m so glad you share it with us here. Hope your week is going well.

        Talk to you soon c…c

        Ciao
