The Evolution of Blogging

I got tell ya, I just love that Flowtown site; from the content to the design, there’s always a great take away plus some wickedly awesome infographics! The talent there is just endless and a pleasure to come across. Damn, I almost wish I owned that fabulous town ;).

Obviously, my incessant tooting of them would mean for you to go check them out – and regularly.

As you well know, I’m a sucker for kick-ass infographics and Flowtown always manages to create some excellent ones that pertain to Social Media. And this particular one is no different.

What once started as a kind of online journal where people could share their personal expressions and random ramblings to no one or a few has now transitioned into one of the most powerful and vibrant communication mediums on the internet.

Many of us often refer to blogs instead of the mainstream media to get our daily news. For others, it’s become their part-time or full-time job and a main source of income through ads, affiliate links and so forth.

Think about it:

If you want the latest news on Technology – where would you go first? The Tech section of The Guardian or the New York Times or a site like TechCrunchGizmodo and Mashable? I would do the latter.

This cool graphic from Flowtown illustrates an amusing yet insightful time line of where bloggers began and where they (we) are today. Have we evolved to reach our full potential or is there more? It even goes so far as to try and predict the future of blogging as – “micro-blogging bloggers”.

Either way, blogging is not a fad and is here to stay. Where and how do you fit in here? What kind of blogger are you?

Great graphical illustration. I think I belong to the obsessive blogger category. A blogger who is passionate about a particular subject and whose passion is igniting a revolution. If you would permit, I would say “blogging to make a difference!”

Thanks Ingrid, for sharing the infographic!

      Hi Tiago and welcome :)!

I’ve always been a big fan of infographics as you can see – I even have an entire section on this site dedicated to just them!

I think they’re a fantastic way to get information across and we tend to remember numbers more easily when we can associate them to a creative design – at least for me.

I’ve just checked out your site – amazing! I’ll be visiting much more often now that you’ve brought it to my attention – thank you for doing so. I may also borrow a few here and there once in a while – and of course if I do – I will link back and credit the source as I always do.

Thanks a lot for stopping by and sharing your site and thoughts. Much appreciate. I look forward to seeing you around these parts more often.

Cheers to a wonderful 2011. May it be filled with health and success.

    Hi Ingrid

Just come across this post on Twitter! As you will summise from the previous comment, I haven’t been actively tweeting or commenting till about 2 days ago!! This Tweetheart was having an unofficial short break. Only been answering comments on my blog and any tweets I needed to. Have now played catch up and back into it all again…yay 😉

Good to be back in full ‘work’ mode again. Love the summaries of the different types of bloggers. Met most of them in my short time in the blogosphere. Looking forward to more awesome posts over here on nittygriddy in 2011 :-)

Happy New Year Ingrid and may 2011 be all you hope for and more. Been great getting to know you in 2010.

Ingrid, this is a great infographic. Its a bit funny but true. I haven’t been blogging all that long, but I have been reading blogs almost from the start and I seen blogs from also categories listed on there….

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hi James,

I really like this infographic as well – but then again – I usually love all the ones I include here lol.

I can also say that I’ve come across quite a few of all these blogger types and more. I think Flowtown did a great job – both creatively and in otherwise.

Thanks for coming by and sharing your 2 cents. Always appreciated.

      Happy 2011
      Cheers

    Hey Ingrid,

Never heard of that Flowtown thingy before stumbling upon on that article. Seems like I am definitely missing. What a great blog that is! Tons of amazing infographics. The one you included in this article is awesome as well. Had a lot of fun reading the various definitions. Thanks for sharing! Wish you all the best for the coming 2011! :)

      Hey Daniel,

      Thanks for dropping by :).
Flowtown is a fantastic site loaded with useful and entertaining information pertaining to the Social Media field and more.

I’m glad you liked this particular infographic – I found it quite creative (most of theirs usually are), humorous and informative. I’m sure there are a few kinds of bloggers missing – like the “vanity blogger” that Ulrich mentioned in his comment below – but all in all – it’s pretty thorough and covers a good chunk of us :).

What I’m even happier about though is that I was able to introduce you to a new site and reference. YaY. That’s what a big part of blogging is about – learning and discovering new things.

Thanks for your kind New Years wishes. I hope the same for you plus tons of health and success.

      Happy 2011
      Cheers

Vanity blogger: [From Wordnet] “the quality of being valueless or futile; ‘he rejected the vanities of the world’ ” .

Or as Eric S. Raymond puts it: “f we had a nickel for every home page we’ve seen that’s a yawn-inducing variation on ‘Hi, here’s me and here’s a cute picture of my dog/cat/boyfriend/girlfriend’ we could retire to Aruba with a bevy of supermodels tomorrow. Clue: if you don’t have something to say, shut up. And keep it off the Web; life is too short for boredom.”

I will confess to have been part of this, but learned that I need to actually put out something there of benefit to people. Now… well I am working on it.

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Haha!

I think “Vanity Blogger” still belongs on this graphic. There are still quite a few of these out there! But then again – a lot of us started out that way before learning our respective niches and a little more about the whole blogging concept. Either way – whatever makes you happy is what I say. If that’s what you (you meaning people) want to express then by all means.

Thanks to you I think I’ve found my new literary hero – Eric Raymond hehe ;).

I’ll be looking forward to reading what you eventually put out there. Seeing the valuable input that you always provide through your comments here, I have no doubt that you’ll be great. Best of luck to you Ulrich and please keep me posted as to when you publish your first blog/post.

Always a pleasure to see you here.
      Cheers

I thought this was an Emo Blog? No? Can someone please direct me to an Emo Blog because I seem to be lost. Thank you.

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

The Emo blog is on the other block silly. Duh!

Just go straight and take your first left. Keep walking 50 meters until you see a DEERS CROSSING sign. There should be 3 preppy looking teenagers discussing existentialism online (with each other) while sipping on a late.

      Glad I could help out.

  • http://www.moremoo.com Adam

Wow…thanks Nitty for bringing this to my attention. However I miss News bloggers? Maybe it is there somewhere but I just can not see this category and I think this one is one of the most important.

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hey Adam,

I’m glad you liked this infographic. Flowtown does a hell of job when it comes to creativity!

I think newbie bloggers is a huge category as well – but I think (correct me someone if I’m wrong) that they’ve mixed the blogger levels here together and just included the different types. So maybe whether you’re a newbie or a pro – doesn’t matter – just matters what niche you’re in.

But either way – great point to bring up – thank you :)!

I’m sure there are a few more categories they may have missed here. Any other ideas as to which ones?

      Cheers

    Definite food for thought here.

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hi Ed,

      Yes indeed there is.
      Thanks for stopping by.

      Cheers

What about the massive Mommyblogger machine? How could that not be a category on its own (I’m thinking on the branch with the food & travel bloggers)?

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      HI Erica,

It’s funny that you mention mommy bloggers – I was asking the same question when I saw that they weren’t included here. I think a few other niches are missing as well.

Although the description of the Obsessive Blogger could maybe include that category and a few other specialty niches – but it’s just the name given to that group that sounds a bit strong lol. But they could actually fit in here.

Thanks for bringing this up. It’s interesting to note the types of bloggers that may not be represented here. Any others?

      Cheers
