Shoes to Show!

as (m)any women will tell you, shoes are precious…just ask carrie in ‘sex and the city’!

each shoe is like an individual work of art; and that is often why our investment in them is scarily close to just that. from chanel to jimmy choo, louboutin to manolo blahnik, dior to gucci; each pair is worth a little fortune that we are happy to spend.

let me ask you this… what is the first thing you look for in a pair of shoes? comfort? you would think so, but not entirely true. you see, we tell ourselves they’re comfortable or that the leather will eventually stretch and we persuade ourselves to believe the lie because even if it takes half of box of band aids to cover up the blisters on our feet, the important thing is that they look good. scratch that…i mean f…ing good! the fact of the matter is that you can be dressed to kill, but the shoes on your feet are what will make or break you!

now i assume that you are all familiar with the names i mentioned above. but have you heard of andreia chaves? probably not, but you will. the sao paolo native has launched a collection of shoes that revolves around architectural concepts – or so it seems. as funky as they look, as wow as they appear, as extravagant as they are, comfort – just isn’t the first adjective that comes to mind. have a look for yourself.

Drunk Drivers Exposed on Twitter…Fame or Shame?

natives of montgomery county, texas will be thinking twice before getting behind the wheel drunk. if you get busted with a dwi this holiday season, your friends and neighbors are bound to hear about it on twitter. the local district attorney’s office has vowed to name and shame those arrested for drunk driving on district attorney brett ligon’s twitter page. abrn809l2 300x172 Drunk Drivers Exposed on Twitter...Fame or Shame?

this tactic, conceived by county vehicular crimes prosecutor warren diepraam, was implemented as an effort to dissuade drunk drivers by threatening them with public humiliation. names will be published on holiday weekends such as christmas, new years, 4th of july and memorial day; which are thought to be times when a lot of people tend to drive under the influence.

although the idea of publicizing names of offenders is not entirely new – for it is not uncommon for local newspapers in the u.s. to publish the names of people charged with dwi’s or prostitute solicitation – these practices remain highly controversial. some internet law bloggers are rallying against this by stressing upon the “innocent until proven guilty” rule.

*for you locals or others that don’t know, in ‘amerka’ dwi stands for driving while intoxicated.

what do you think? has the houston-area county gone too far or is it right in publishing the names on twitter? do you think this will help decrease the number of drunk drivers on the road? claim to fame or shame? post your comments!

Korean Woman Fails Driving Exam 949 Times!

[NOTE: The original title of this post was “950 Tries to Drive”]

 Korean Woman Fails Driving Exam 949 Times!

image credit: via Whatsonxiamen.com

I’m sure you’ve all heard it said at one time or another that Asians can’t drive! Maybe that’s why you see so many of them on bicycles… or maybe it’s just a stereotype – I don’t know, you tell me after reading this story.

A South Korean woman has been attempting to pass her written exam for a driver’s license since 2005! You may be thinking what’s the big deal? Many people have failed the exam a few times. The big deal is: she didn’t fail it a few times. She’s failed it 949 times – or 237 times a year for 4 years!  Talk about persistence…

Are they seriously gonna’ let this 68 year old woman drive? Of course she still needs to pass her driving test first, and that may take another 4 years or so; meaning that by that time she’ll be 72. I could go on and on about this, and normally I probably would – by making a few wise-cracks or a couple sarcastic jokes; but instead, I’ve decided to end the tale of the ‘unbelievable drive and trials of Cha Sa – soon’. You know what they say – if at first you don’t succeed than try and try and try and try and try…again!

IPhone You Free

People are always looking for ways to save money; even if it means cracking a few codes and fooling the system. And if you live in Lebanon, you know that no one does this better than the Lebanese. This teeny tiny country off the Mediterranean coast excels in everything that has to do with swiping and pirating – from dvd’s to tv and internet cable connections. For God sakes, some even snatch electricity and water (ironically enough it’s almost become a norm in certain areas)!

When cell phones first came out in the 90’s, some bored or broke tech geek managed to find a glitch with a few of the Sony Ericsson models. All you had to do was punch in a few keys, take out the battery while dialing (or something like that) and your call was free!

In this case here, kipkay beat us to it! He’s figured out how to turn an ipod touch into a phone; and not just any regular phone; but one that makes free calls!

Take a look at this short video to learn how to start calling for free from your iTouch.

Deck the House with Lights of Folly

Christmas is right around the corner. Only 6 more days till the big day.

Your stockings are hung by the chimney with care…your snow flecked tree is adorned with ornaments and flair…your presents are wrapped for your kids to tear…all in hopes that St. Nick soon will be there!

Wow, this really does sound like a Christmas poem for kids :).

For those of you who still haven’t decorated the outside of your house, here’s a little video that is sure to inspire you.

The mezmerizing display – involving over 21,000 lightbulbs and leds, some fancy electrical know-how and a Wii Guitar Hero controller – was created by Ric Turner,  a special effects expert who used to work for Disney’s imagineering division.

How To Make A Metal Detector

so you’re strolling along the beach and you stumble across a rusty old coin which looks like it dates back to the early 16th century. although it probably doesn’t you simply decide that  its from that time period because a wave of intelligence has suddenly struck you and your long lost passion of becoming a treasure hunter has returned – plus, you figure it’s pretty cool to feel like you know what you’re talking about.

at that point you already see yourself on the cover of next month’s time magazine entitled “the discovery of the century”. you’ve been coined as ‘the  modern day magellan’, ‘the savior of long lost artifacts’, ‘the next gazillionaire’! but wait…is one measly coin enough? there has to be more! if only you had a metal detector with you.

and that’s when you run home, log on to youtube, find the instructional video and start making one on your own. so for all you dreamers out there, watch the tutorial below to learn how to make a metal detector in just a few minutes using old junk.

Forgive Me Fan(s), For I Was Off!

Ever Wonder ‘How To’ Do Something?

There are times when boredom strikes and you find that you have absolutely nothing to do!

  • You’ve zapped through every channel on tv and there’s nothing good on
  • You’ve watched all your new movies,
  • You’ve read all your magazines 3 times
  • You’re too tired to get dressed and too lazy to go out
  • You’re too much of a procrastinator to work on a project that’s due next week…

It’s during such times that the little gerbil inside your brain starts to spin the wheel and all of a sudden gets you thinking about the most random of things. And that my friends, is exactly my case tonight.

While babbling on the phone with my ultra tech-savvy, electronics aficionado, gadget guru, friend (special), I was directed to this super clever and quite entertaining site called WonderHowTo. Basically,  it teaches you how to do the most useless yet fascinating, amazing but outlandish, cool and crazy stuff. so, if you’ve always wanted to know how to blow bubbles from a blank cd, build a water rocket, make a motor from a plastic cup, beat a polygraph test or even start a fire using potato chips, then this is the site for you!

In my attempt to conquer the intense feeling of boredom, I continued to look for similar sites and came across www.kipkay.com – which is less extensive but just as wild!

Hence, I have decided to add a new category to nittyGriddy called, How To – where every so often i will include a post with a video about how to do or build something or other.

Reasons why you may be interested in ‘ever wonder how to’:

1) If you are really keen on acquiring random knowledge

2) If you think you’ve got what it takes to try and/or invent something on your own

3) If you want to entertain your friends at a party

4) If you want to impress your date

5) If you’ve watched one too many episodes of macgyver

6) If you’re simply bored to tears simple smile Ever Wonder How To Do Something?

Christmas Time in Paris

champselysees Christmas Time in Paris

[NOTE: The original title of this post was “Ah, Paris Paris!”]

Tis’ the season to be jolly in the city of lights…

Griddy here; reporting live from Paris.

It’s no wonder they call it the most beautiful city in the world; the more you go the more you realize that every quartier, avenue, street, monument, building, boutique, cafe, patisserie and park has a charm of its own and a history that is beyond compare.

Paris in December is simply a must see for it is nothing short of magnificent.

On my way back from dinner tonight from one of the city’s newest artsy-fartsy hotspots, Derriere* (which literally means ‘behind’ in French), I couldn’t help but stare in awe from the back seat window of the car at the classy Christmas decorations that adorn the famous Champs Elysees, the elegant Place Vendome and the posh Avenue Montaigne.

My mouth wide open – speechless and mesmerized. The city’s glow could easily light up a thousand skies and souls.

 Christmas Time in Paris

So I’ll say it again, regardless of how cliche it may sound, “Paris truly is the most beautiful city in the world” – minus the Parisians, that is.

It’s the way the Arc de Triomphe gloriously stands at the intersection of the world’s most famous avenue;

It’s the way the shimmering Eiffel Tower majestically rises over the paris skyline proclaiming its strength and heritage;

It’s the way the gigantic children’s carousel on the Place de la Concorde flickers its magical lights as it spins its way into the New Year;

It’s the way the symmetrically planted trees illuminate even the dullest of side streets;

It’s the way that one million plus people that are strolling down the chilly streets of Paris tonight thinking the exact same thing as me.

The point is, if you are not there right now…GO!
