Bring IT! What Attracts You to a Blog?

Betty Boop Attractive Blog Bring IT! What Attracts You to a Blog?Forgive me friends, for I have sinned!

Last week, I subtly skipped Bring IT! but in my defense – I felt awful about it.

I was sorta hoping you’d all get a sudden case of “one time Wednesday amnesia” but I guess not. So I figured you’d all find it in your hearts to forgive me and come back this week instead :).

And yes…I know today is Thursday, but just pretend it’s Wednesday okay ;)?

Anyhow, after staring at the screen for an hour then hanging over at Gini’s house while she talks about nothing for another 20 minutes or so, I finally thought of a topic. A silent clap or cheer from you would be nice right now – thank you ;).

So are you ready to Bring IT!?

Good to know…Let’s do it then!

What Attracts You to a Blog?

What makes you stay when you visit someone’s site for the first time?

What does it take for a blog to make a good impression on you?

What makes you come back?

As for Me…

Now you know as well as I do that I could whip up 3,000 words on this topic – but I won’t. Sigh…

I’m gonna’ limit myself so that you can share all that I’m thinking and more over at my little coffee shop slash chat room – “Central Perk” ;).

When you think of what attracts you to someone’s blog, the reasons should be similar to what attracts you to someone’s home. Because YOUR BLOG IS YOUR HOME! Treat it as such!

Think of what your ideal house would look like and the people you’d want in it and do the same. Lucky for you, this house won’t cost you much, if anything at all! Just a bunch of TLC ;).

Needless to say that you can’t please everyone, so spare yourself the headache and don’t go on mission impossible. But if you have a niche and know your audience or the one you want, you should have the basics.

Call me shallow – I don’t give a baboon’s butt (sounds better and more creative than saying – rat’s ass lol)! But looks DO matter to me!

Seriously guys – no bullshit. When you spot a woman sitting at a bar, what’s the first thing you notice? Her face (or physical features) or her soul and character?

Don’t even try to weazle your way out of this one! Same goes for you ladies.

Before you actually talk to someone, the FIRST thing you notice is their physique – after that, it’s a different story…

Well, it’s the same thing for blogs. When I land on your blog, the first thing I’m gonna look at is your design or appearance. And trust me when I tell you that it takes no more than 3 seconds to know whether you plan on staying or getting the heck out. It’s the same as walking into someone’s house – you notice the layout and decor.

If all I see is clutter and a digital version of Times Square…ba bye!

If I need a microscope to read your font, or a dictionary to understand what you’re saying…see ya!

If I don’t see any structure in your paragraphs or I just see ONE loooong one…aurevoir!

If I don’t see images to go with your posts…ciao!

More often than not – people judge on appearances.

Sad? Yes…but ohhh, so very true!

After that, I look at content…or “character”. Because let’s face it, that girl can be pretty as all hell – but if you’re looking for something more than a “drive-by”, what comes out of her mouth when she talks WILL matter to you.

So yes…you can have the best looking site on the net, but if your content is crap, I’m not gonna’ hang around long.

You need to inspire me, entertain me, have an impact on me or teach me something. But while doing any of these things, you need to sound like yourself. If I don’t know you, that means you need to sound like a frickin’ human. I want to hear your take, your experiences, your tone and not regurgitated cow dong.

That’s the bottom line!

I’m also gonna’ look at your friends, or your community. That’s right folks…that means your comments!

Do you have any?

Are you replying to them?

Are conversations being initiated?

Does it look like people feel at home?

The thing is…it’s pretty obvious to tell when someone cares about their blog.

If I see words without personality and one way conversations, then to me – you don’t care enough so why should I bother?

I have at least another 20 reasons that I could include here, but like I said – I want to hear your side.

So tell me…

What About You?

When you visit a blog, what makes you stay, read and join the conversation?

What are the basic must have’s?

Central Perk is now open and coffee is on the way. Grab a couch, put your feet up and Bring IT!

Ah the age old question…how to attract visitors to your blogs…your post is spot on…really…but I think despite following all of your excellent suggestions, it can still be hard to increase that oh-so-elusive visibility. I think that, following all of your suggestions (appearance, content, comments) it becomes an exercise in persistence while you keep fine tuning and plugging away in the hopes that you eventually attain that “tipping point”….that magical point where you’ve generated enough of a following that the blog almost creates it’s own buzz. Meanwhile…until that happens ;-)… I’ll keep plugging along being mindful of this great post!

    Great post!

For me its the content above ALL ELSE, but what I mean by that is UNIQUE CONTENT. I read personal blogs more often than any other kind, and what I am always looking for is a voice I can relate to, and an unique perspective. So many people are just regurgitating or summarizing information found elsewhere. A pretty site is nice, but a simple site with actual original thought is the only type of site that I ever subscribe to!

I try to acheive this on my own site launched in May, http://www.AllAmericanIndianGirl.com, but I guess the visitors will decide!

Looks (first impression) does play a big part of staying on a blog for me… I hate those ones with lots of flashing lights and affiliate links… It’s hard to get past for me.

Your awesome looks didn’t have anything to do with me subscribing to your blog – hehe!

Community is what’s it’s all about Ingrid. I like to be part of communities with substance. I wish I could contribute more of it to all of our mutual friends, but I’m a bit limited on my time. But, I do put forth an effort to contribute to the conversation.

I like feeling at home on blogs I frequent, just like I feel here : )

You’ve built an amazing community of awesome folks here ma’am!

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hey Mark,
I hear ya about the flashing lights – they kinda blind you after a while lol. And thank you for not judging me (my blog) by looks alone hahaha.

I know exactly what you mean when you say you wish you could contribute more to all the communities of friends that we have. We’re unfortunately all limited by time and moods even. But I must say you do a hell of a job when you do – and you do often!!!

You always have such kind words to say Mark and I hope you know that I always appreciate them and you. So thanks :)).

Hope you’re having a great week.
      Cheers

  • http://vizsource.info/ Kim Davies

    Hi, Ingrid.

I know I should become engaged in the conversation and tell you what attracts me to a blog, but seriously, the comments here made me laugh, giggle and rolling on the floor so hard, I can’t think straight. 😀 Now, if that won’t make me come back for more, I don’t know what will. 😉
That’s what I get for being late for the party, AGAIN. But, if being late brings me this, then I’d be glad to be late all the time. :) But, yeah, if I were to forget laughing for a moment and think about the topic here, I’d say the personality and the voice of the blogger gets me every time.

Can I go back to laughing now? 😀

    Tickled pink,
    Kim :)

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hey Kim,
You’re right – there are some awesomely funny comments here. I’m still trying to reply to everyone but I’ve been a bit late :(.

Personality and voice are two things which make a hell of a difference when I read someone’s blog. I know that I don’t want to be reading a college thesis style paper that’s monotonous and bland – if I do, I’m outta there!

I’m glad you get a few laughs out of this :).
And yes – you may totally go back to laughing now lol ;).

Hope you’re having a good Thursday.
      All the best

  • http://www.3hatscommunications.com/blog/ davinabrewer

Great comments here as always. @twitter-59802772:disqus is just fab. I think I’m with many on the design for a first time blog discovery: clean, easy to read, good formatting, clear on the type of blog, its focus. As to coming back, think I’m with @johnfalchetto:disqus  and others about the content and community.
Good content gets me to read a blog post. Consistently good content gets added to my Reader. Ok, that’s not much of a win since my reader is on perpetual “mark all as read” mode; faves get added to Must Read folder and Twitter column. What ALWAYS brings me back for more: community and comments. Yes there are times it’s about the fun and banter, often we have really good debates on topics, just a lot to learn. When everyone is on top of their games, adding powerful and valuable comments on a regular basis… THAT is what makes a blog a house party I want to crash on a regular basis. FWIW.

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hey Lada QATA,
      How’s it going?
I’ve been a bit late in replying to everyone here but I”m working my way through the comments – slowly but surely lol :).

You’re right in that Shakirah as well as many others had some great comments and made awesome additions.

And yes – content and community are always a must for me!
Speaking of “mark all as read” on Reader – I might have to do that soon since I’m at 518 unread posts! Yikes – I’m not quite sure how long it will take me to go through them but I’m trying not to have to click on that button until at least skimming though most to see what captures my attention. I might be done in 2013 haha!

And you’re so right in saying that the fun, the debates and the valuable ideas that go on in the comments section are what make it a good party! Heck, we don’t even need an invite to rock it ;)!!!

That’s one of the greatest things I love about this blog – the party that goes on here. I adore my little version of Central Perk and it’s all thanks to you guys!

Sorry again for my late reply Davina. Stupid things called time and life got in the way for a bit but I’m all over it!!!

Wishing you a good end of week.

      Hey Ben,
I absolutely agree with you about personality. It’s what makes the blog unique. Each author has to have their own voice – and one that stands out. Being likeable, friendly and welcoming is also a huge plus of course :).

I look for clean professional design to feel welcome on a blog (too many ads and I am gone), love to browse around genuine useful tips, and if I like what I read, I tweet it, share it. blog it. If I like the consistency in content, a targeted interesting approach then I subscribe RSS and read their about page to maintain a long term readership.

What attracts me to a blog? Hmmm, lovely looking lebanese ladies maybe?? 😉

    OK, here’s why I read a blog:

    1. Tons of passion in the writing.
    2. Tons of personal experience in the writing.
    3. Community and relationships are emphasized.
    4. Titles—Titles have to be good people!!!
    5. Did I say passion?

BTW, I’m writing this comment on a Sunday and…uhmmm, I don’t see the Super Sunday post! 😉

And a big phat LOL to the attractive Lebanese ladies :).
As to why you read blogs – I had no doubt that you and I would share the same opinion on this my dear friend! And YES for titles – I neglected to mention that one but it does matter. I’m much more for the creative titles rather than the functional one’s for Google!

As for community and relationships – I think you and I could write 100 pages about that hehe ;).

And touche my friend – I was indeed at the beach scorching in the sizzling sun haha. But I did have the SPS finished and scheduled to go online – but silly me – I messed up the dates and when I realized the error of my ways – I published it manually ASAP on Monday.

How’s your week treating you so far?

  • http://iSeeSalesPeople.com Sergio Felix

    Hi Ingrid,

Well I just came back -as promised- and just read your whole post again, went through all the comments and now I’m ready to comment!

Side note: I hardly see anyone posting about the importance of reading the post’s comments as well before commenting.

Not doing this could easily lead to commenting about something already discussed and looking like an idiot -not been there myself in the past but let’s pretend that I did for empathy to others-.
So for the nitty griddy I happen to agree with you and almost every comment I’ve just read and to not be misjudged, my analogy comes from books, reading technology books that is.I know this has been said everywhere and I’m sick of reading about “content is king”.

I agree that content plays a huge part of the formula but I like it this way:

    +content
    +way it’s presented
    +writing tone
    +conversational flow
    +occasional notes that struck emotions
+so many others but I think my point has been made by now

    A few real life scenarios:
I never liked programming books. They were all boring, plain, single tone, definitely not conversational.

I felt like I was being given instructions by freaking robots or even worse, by a very boring guy who was writing like he was being forced to do it.

The younger authors emerged, who started making Star Wars/Star Trek analogies (I already got bored from those as well but I loved them in the beginning) and now there’s people that will write about very complicated stuff and create very funny and understandable analogies from time to time thus making the lectures a lot easier to read and understand.

Now THAT’s something that gets me hooked and the more I read, the more interested I’d get.

Applying the same concept to online marketing, I’m checking a product right now that’s about building micro niche sites and blah blah you all know the rest.

What grabbed my attention is that the author talks about how he built this tropical fish site and how he makes a really good income from that on “autopilot” (yes I know this may sound hyped, but stay with me)

So I’m reading the copy of this site, and I found in the testimonials that some girl got a new fish as a gift and she called it “Menace” because the fish would be chasing every other fish in the tank and she considered it to be just that, a menace!

Remember that I’m reading on a site that was all serious about great care to tropical fish, showcasing pictures and suddenly you get to read that and also see a sweet girl and some cute fish pictures and you’re instantly sold on it.

That feeling of “I’m just checking this thing out, I’m not here to buy anything” just goes away immediately making you a prospect to buy.

The main objective of that site is to sell you an eBook on fish care and if I was genuinely interested in taking care for a fish I’d be almost ready to buy, so that curve ball was the cause to break that defensive mode we all enter with when we get to a new place.

The same remains true for blogging.

You want people to read, comment, interact, then the blog’s owner should write great content but throw some curve balls to trigger their reader’s emotions from time to time.

No wonder why more blogs are suddenly writing about stuff totally unrelated to their niches, some even would assign a day or two to be completely off topic in order to give some space and take a little time off to share with their readers.

About the blog looks, well all the bells, whistles, buttons, little things to interact with, backgrounds, tiles, creative use of layers, animations, etc I think anyone is able to do that or outsource it but writing great content with the characteristics mentioned in the beginning, well that can’t be faked, either you have it or you don’t.

And this is finally the end of my comment! 😉

PS. I remember telling you that this blog was the resemblance of a perfect design… I still think it is!

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

Sergio my friend – that’s a hell of a comment! I kinda wanna print it out haha!
Thanks so much for taking the time to write all this out and to share your very valuable thoughts with us here. Awesome stuff – truly!!! :))

Presentation has always been a huge thing for me. You can write about the most boring topic, but if you can manage to entertain your readers through out then you’re golden in my book! I always use that for the short vs. long post debate as well – in that it doesn’t matter how long your post is – what matters is how you captivate your audience till the end.

Funny thing is that I just read your comment on my recent Bring IT! post so I understand your example of the fish care eBook here ;).

And yes – more and more I’m seeing some blogs go off-topic once in a while and it’s actually refreshing sometimes. I know we are suppose to stick to our respective niches but sometimes it’s nice to touch on something else – something that could make your readers want to join the conversation even more. Take my last Bring IT! for example or several others – they might not be related to blogging tips or Social Media Marketing but they certainly show a great side of community building. Sometimes – people just want to let go and have a little fun. And fun is addictive and contagious. When people see others talking freely in the comments it entices them to do the same and join the many little fun discussions that might be taking place.

Thanks again for this AMAZING comment! I can’t thank you enough sharing your personal examples as well – that always makes the reading even more pleasant :).

And another thank you for the kind compliment on my design – although, it really could be improved (they always can) – I like to think that it reflects me and my blog. But there are a few small changes coming soon – but of course the style and tone will remain just the way it is!

Hope your week is going well.
And if I haven’t said it before – I’ll say it now – it’s such a pleasure to have you as a part of this community my friend.

      All the best
      Cheers

  • http://iSeeSalesPeople.com Sergio Felix

I would say you came back and then some! You rocked it is more like it!!! :))

Great tips Griddy! I like the house analogy.  My husband always gives me grief for having the house emaculate whenever we throw a dinner party.  Think about it, appearance all around counts. Isn’t it nicer to have a tidy house, good food and good hosts!

I have my cup of coffee, it is 7:30 am EST so here goes.  I agree appearance and font really count.  Then it is
    1) value: does it add value (Like @ginidietrich:disqus @johnfalchetto:disqus @Saleslion:twitter @Dannybrown:twitter etc, so many others
    2) Does it make me laugh.  My friend who writes 4 kids 20 suitcases and a beagle always makes me laugh (or cry).  Google it she is on blogspot.  Read her traveling tampon one, very funny!
3)Does it provide a sense of community?  This I learned from all of you and love!

Since you mention it, have a look at my home page… Would love to hear your feedback.  You can send a  comment privately: drrajka@expatdoctormom:disqus.com so if you want to criticize it is ok. I am spending June working in Phoenix and working on brushing up my site.  I think I have font, and pics down.  I am going to streamline it a bit and clean some stuff up soon as well as add a box to easily retweet and share on FB at the top (not just at the bottom in along line…) and add a box to receive future comments.

I should have prefaced the above with: This is a rather bold request of me as I usually do not ask of others… It was the cup of coffee we are sharing!  This is an analogy I use on my site as well :)

    Have a great Sunday!

Thanks Rajka for the mention :)

I was wondering if you knew Kristi who once wrote about having 2000 condoms in her bag….this made me laugh so hard.

      • Anonymous

@johnfalchetto:disqus, I know Kirsty!  I first met her in a writer’s workshop held by Bloomsbury (Qatar’s Bloomsbury)  She was funny during the class. Loved the 2,000 condoms as well.  She has a book offer with Harper’s Collins and has been working on that!

  • http://www.slymarketing.com Jens P. Berget

    Hey Ingrid,

Looks matter, but only if I haven’t heard of the blogger (or the blog) before. The first time I visited John Falchetto’s blog or Mark Harai’s blog, I didn’t think about looks at all. I was all over the content before I realized what the blog looked like. But that was because I’ve met them somewhere else online first.
It certainly helps to have a photo either at the header (The Sales Lion) or in the sidebar (you). It makes the first impression personal, and that means a lot to me.

But, when it comes to looks, I don’t care about how awesome the design is. It’s just important that it doesn’t look like a very “cheap” blog or the default wordpress theme :)

Usually, what attracts me to a blog is not the blog, but the person writing it. And usually, almost always, it’s because I’ve met them somewhere else and not via a search on Google.

    I like blogs that:
-make me snort into my tea with laughter
    -make me comment
-make me think, “I wish I’d said that.”
-make me think, “I wish I could write like that.”
-make me “get” the person on the other end.
-make me respect an honest opinion I don’t agree with
-make me go back through the old posts to get more of that good stuff
-make me smarter at least sometimes
-make me feel included as if the existing blog community
-make me click furtively for a little shot of “real people” from my home office
-make me click on mentions to find more amazing people the blogger is connected to
-make me think of them whenever someone asks about my favorite blogs

Alright, let me stop. Thanks for bringing IT any day you do, Griddy!

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

That is an AWESOME checklist Shakirah :)). Thank you for the great additions.

I could go through these one by one and tell you YES, YES, YES, YES….cause I couldn’t agree with you more.

I have read so many posts that I wish I’d written myself – and I usually make it a point to tell the author how I feel. Cause to me – when someone says that about one of my blog posts – it means a hell of a lot.

As for making someone feel that they’re a post of the community – well…it should be obvious to you how I feel about this. A blog’s community is what gives it life – it’s what draws you in further and keeps you coming back knowing that your friends will be there listening and talking with you.

Once again – super points :).
      Hope you enjoy your weekend.

      Cheers

Must also give this comment a SHOUT-OUT! Like Ingrid, ITA with all of these. Love it when posts teach me something, surprise me, help me learn something new or just a different way of doing something old. Damn Shakirah, wish I wrote this! :-)

Wait – so…does this not count as a comment then? haha 😉

  • http://twitter.com/CristerDelacruz CristerDelacruz

I wasn’t able to read the post yesterday, but I.LOVE.IT!   Yup, looks matter. I like pretty pictures (and of course, that’s definitely subjective).

Take online dating for instance. I’m a big proponent of Match.com over eHarmony. Why? Because on Match I can weed through pictures. Shallow? No, I’ve got to know if I’m going to be attracted to that person and enjoy looking at them.  On eHarmony, they say that it’s based on other things beyond looks and you begin and develop a communication with someone even BEFORE you see pictures. Well that’s great and dandy, but let’s face it, you’ve got to like what you’re looking at.

BUT… having said all that, as in blogs, there’s got to be the brains behind the looks to keep me coming back.

  • http://www.thejackb.com/ The JackB

Content, comments and design are what capture my attention but there are limits. If I can’t read it because it is too cluttered or the font is “weird” then I usually take off.

I don’t pay a ton of attention to how many comments someone receives but I pay attention to whether they respond/engage with their readers.

But content is king for me. It is what brings me back or sends me on my journey to the next blog. Good content and you’ll see me again.

  • http://www.central-e-commerce.com Gabriella – the stepford wife

Yes, we’d all be wrong in saying we don’t at least consider looks into a matter – okay, except for that 0.01% whom like to stick to their choice. Honestly, in reality it is slightly different until you get to know the person and change your mind about what they are like but a website/blog…. is another story. No matter how good your content is, I will not want to proceed further if the design and functionality puts me off – what a downer. Seriosuly.

  • http://www.expatlifecoach.com/blog John Falchetto

I think there are two things, reading great content and then hang out at a blog.

Some have both (yours, Gini’s Marcus..) others have great content but no community, simply because they feel to clicky and they just aren’t welcoming.

Looks matter,  is right, if the place is a mess and I need to zoom in 10 times to read you size 8 font text with no paragraphs, I’m outa there.
But then posts are only part of the story, the real deal for me is the comments, what’s going on there?

Looking back what first brought me to your blog was your GP at Spin Suck. Once I landed I really enjoyed the funky design, then I started reading ” Technorati do you see me NOW?” and I just knew I had found a really smart and cool blog.
Don’t get me started on the madness that goes on in the comments section here :) It reminds me of some after-parties in Montreal.

Yala, mabrouk for coming back online, your Griddyness was missed in the bloggosphere :)

    • http://www.slymarketing.com Jens P. Berget

I agree John. I usually end up at a blog after I have either read a guest post, or I have been introduced to the person via another blog I am already reading (via comments or if the author is talking about the person). When this happens, I don’t look at the design that much, because I already know that the content is good. But if I ended up at a blog after searching google, looks matters a lot.

  • http://twitter.com/janesheeba Jane Sheeba

I come to a blog (get attracted to it) by a compelling title. Otherwise I wouldn’t mind. But after I landed on a blog, if the design is pleasing, fonts and colors are not scary I will decide to stay. I hate large chunks of text as you say, and I simply leave a blog is it is not pleasing design wise.

I also look for a personal touch where I can find about who is behind the blog and other things.  Even though I don’t leave a blog for this reason, I am not much interested or involved in blogs where I don’t find info about the author etc.

It is sad but true “great content is always respected only on a great design and a presentation”

    Jane.

  • http://twitter.com/WeBlogBetter Kiesha E

    Hi Ingrid,
I think what attracts me to a blog is the title of the posts.  If it’s catchy enough and when I click to read it immediately engages me then I’ll stick around.

Of course, I agree that design does matter.  There’s a certain look that all spam blogs seem to have, but every now and then you’ll catch a newbie blogger with raw talent that hasn’t quite stepped up the design.  If the content is good, I might just hang around.

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hey Kiesha,
Please excuse the late reply :(. My bad!
You’re so right in that blog titles are imperative and catchy is the key word here.
I much prefer those folks who come up with creative titles rather than those who make them functional for the search engines. After all – it’s the first thing you notice – and the last thing you want to make it sound as is BLAND!

And yes again – there are always exceptions to design. And the newbie blogger or the tech challenged one is a great example. Like you said – if I take the time to read the content and like what I see – I’m sure I will get past the look and read on and come back!

Thanks so much for adding your input here my dear. It’s always a pleasure and an honor to see you here. Once again – my apologies for keeping you waiting so long. I’m still trying to catch up to responding to everyone on this piece. Better late than never though right?!

Hope you’re having a great week.
      Cheers

  • http://www.logallot.com Sonia

I am very attracted to a blog’s design. If it looks like crap, hurts my eyes or gives me a headache, I am outta there. I can’t count how many endless blogs with thousands of banner ads, loud colors and badges I run across. Why do this? Another thing of course is content and humor with it. I get the ideas behind some blogs, but lighten up already. I hate the seriousness behind some blogs where you get the feeling they take themselves way too seriously. Some of the blogs I read the most, make me laugh in some way where they still get their point across, which adds more value to their post.

When I started out, I must have changed my theme 3 times before finally settling on one and I am about to do something else to add more features that my current theme doesn’t offer. I love what people come up with and how they relate it to blogging or life in general. Blogs that are straight to the point gets my attention big time. I love it when a blogger isn’t afraid to really say what’s on their mind in their “true” voice.

  • http://spinsucks.com Gini Dietrich

I’m so glad I guilted you into writing this, even if it is a day late.

So I’m going to throw a wrench in this. I never read blog posts on people’s blogs. The only reason I come here is to comment. So I don’t give a baboon’s butt what it looks like. What I do care about is if I can easily share it and if I can reply to comments through a powerful system like this one or Livefyre. That’s it. I read blogs in Google so I never see the design.

Now what’s wrong with baboons? It’s ok you don’t care about the design of blogs but there is no need to take it out on these poor animals.

      • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

        Hola John,
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with baboons my friend – they’re quite the cuties SOMETIMES. But seriously – have you seen their butts? Really? I mean – nature should have been kinder to them haha.

        • http://spinsucks.com Gini Dietrich

I love monkeys. All kinds of monkeys.

Have you met the Bonobo chimp yet? They’re like bunny rabbits in that they live to monkey around haha ;).

        Hey Crister,

It really is one of the more unattractive things to look at isn’t it? hahaI’m glad Gini used it again here :). When I said it in my post – I just figured it was so much more creative than saying rat’s ass or one of the other cliche’s that I do admit to using every so often. Oh well…

And yes – I know exactly the NG documentaries that you’re talking about hehe.

Thanks for stopping by Crister. Much appreciated.

        Cheers

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

Thank you Aunt Gini :). Better late than never right? Plus – it seems people didn’t mind after all lol.

You know – funny thing is that I’ve been using Google Reader a little more lately so I know what you mean – although I still love reading an article on the blog itself. It’s silly I know – but I like to get a feel for the surrounding – that’s probably why I never open a site via my mobile – just doesn’t feel the same.

But you’re absolutely right in that it has to be easy to share!
Now, thanks to you – I’m reminded that I have 463 posts in my Reader – Crap!
Oddly enough – unlike many – I often subscribe to blogs that interest me so that I don’t forget to check them out. I mean – there are some blogs like yours and our gang that I check everyday so I can’t possibly forget about them and it wouldn’t matter if I subscribed or not cause I’m still gonna try and read every post (but I am subscribed). I subscribe to one’s that I come across and like that I don’t want to forget. I guess that’s my way of using Reader.

Thanks for your input Gin and for saying baboon’s butt again. I’m glad you liked it and now I’m thinking it should become a trend since it’s so much cooler than rat’s ass! Don’t you think? lol 😉

      Enjoy your Saturday.

    • http://www.3hatscommunications.com/blog/ davinabrewer

Hmm… can you comment, reply or RT from your reader? Just curious. I may scan a post in the Reader but if I get pulled in and want to comment, I just click to go to the post (and read the other comments).

      • http://spinsucks.com Gini Dietrich

You can do everything, except comment, from your Reader. So the only time I go to anyone’s blog is when I’m commenting. And then I don’t look at the design. I just comment (or reply like I’m doing right now).

        • http://www.3hatscommunications.com/blog/ davinabrewer

Gotcha. There have been days when there have been a number of Disqus comments and I’ve been able to reply to them all from there, rather than going to each site. Saved a little time.. totally random, FWIW.

          • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

I’ve actually rarely shared directly from Reader. If I see that I’m interested – I’m just gonna’ click to go straight to the blog itself and do my thing from there ;).
You can reply to Disqus comments from there? Really? I didn’t know that. Then again – I don’t even reply to comments from my phone – I have to come to the actual post and do it here – especially since I no longer get them on my phone since everything has been going to my junk folder for a month now! Grrrr….so annoying – I still can’t figure out what happened!

            • http://www.3hatscommunications.com/blog/ davinabrewer

Don’t remember exactly but there was a day I had a number of Disqus replies… somehow I went on their site instead and was able to reply to them on Disqus rather than going to each site. Kinda cool, saved a little time.

        • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

Please tell me you’ve actually seen my blog’s design – it’s truly an award winning one and has been on the front cover of most design magazines hahahaha ;). Just kiddin’ Gin.

            You have a blog?

  • http://www.solobizcoach.com SoloBizCoach

I am getting to be a blog snob.  Here are some of my snobbish tendencies.

    1.  URL – Is there a hyphen, a wordpress.com, a blogspot.com?  If so, goodbye.
    2.  About page – If there is no about page, good bye.
    3.  Colors – The black background and neon green text have got to go!

I hope that I am not turning into a curmudgeon.

    • http://spinsucks.com Gini Dietrich

      You’re totally a curmudgeon!

      • http://twitter.com/skypulsemedia Howie at Sky Pulse Media

I am PROUDLY keeping my Blogspot.com in my blog because I am not a pro-blogger and my techie skills are not what I have as my value. Oh and I have a black backrgound because I am a SPACE ALIEN! I have no choice =P I have superior insight to most Marketers since they all bullshit anyway and don’t champion brands like I do. And I would rather read a Blogger.com blog with great content than a slick looking blog with crappy content.

I proudly read only 6 of the the AdAge 50 blogs and 2 are RWW and PSFK. I don’t read Godin or Brogan or Solis or any number of ‘cough’ mainstream writers because they bring nothing unique and new to my world view. I will learn more from @johnfalchetto:disqus in his world in France or my friend @luckthelady:twitter  who at her still young age (though honorary Gen-Xer) is smarter than the CMO’s of most big company’s.

My question is when you look for a blog do you pick Britney Spears or the Ramones? Thomas Kinkade or Banksy? Harlequin Romance or Hunter S Thompson? I want renegade. I want disruptor. I want the person saying F-U to the mainstream because that is where the action is.

What url they are on means nothing. In fact I prefer reading Blogs typed on Linux Machines because Macs are so mainstream now they aren’t renegade anymore. They are like Upper East Side Yuppie vs Lower East side edgy.

        So there =P

        • http://twitter.com/skypulsemedia Howie at Sky Pulse Media

And I want the Blog to BRING IT!

      • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

I never read Seth! I should once in a while at least. Maybe this week :)

        • http://spinsucks.com Gini Dietrich

      LOL Fred
I think a few of us have become blog snobs sometimes but hey…as long as we’re not life snobs then we’re good right? 😉

Although I much prefer a self-hosted site – I will make the exception if the content is deserving of it!
The about page is an absolute must – no two ways about it!
Colors – good God YES! Neon should be reserved to strip club signs and cheesy car plates hahaha. Kidding.

As for CURMUDGEON – Love it!!! I may have to borrow that from you one day :).

Thanks for chipping in and adding these Fred. I appreciate it!

      Cheers

    • http://billdorman.wordpress.com Bill Dorman

Ok Fred, I’m ‘that guy’ but I have to ask; if you are just stopping by to comment and all it requires is for you to click on my site, comment and leave why do I need to pay for a self-hosted site? Other than the ease of sharing, what am I gaining with a self-hosted site? Curious minds want to know………….

From some of the comments it appears that my free site might be a detriment for you to stop by and with 9 zillion choices out there it would be easy to pass up. But I would be very curious if I flipped the switch and went w/ a self-hosted site if the number of people coming by would change at all. I guess there is one way to find out, huh?

I don’t mind if mine is the birthday present wrapped in newspaper; all I’m doing is writing. Why do I need a Ferrari to drive down to the grocery store?

  • http://getbusylivingblog.com Benny Hsu

When I tell people about blog design I do make the analogy of wanting to impress a girl as well. You don’t want flashy gold chains and a shirt that looks like it’s from the 80’s. It doesn’t have to be fancy but just look cleaned up at least.

If a blog is ugly I’m leaning towards leaving. But I’ll look at the content. I mean I’ll scan first. If is horribly formatted with long paragraphs I won’t read it. I think it’s like 90% of people scan your stuff!! Unless your content is superb like Seth Godin who’s going to read super long paragraphs word for word?

If you meet a guy and he’s cute but when he opens his mouth he sounds like a 10th grader you’ll probably run away! So there needs to be some intelligence to go with the design.

Those are the two main things that don’t make me come back!

    • http://www.realityburst.com Eugene Farber

I agree. Easily scanable is a biggie for me. Not even necessarily because I just want to scan the post, but because that makes it easier to read in general. So readability is huge for me. I do care about the aesthetic side of a bit but the content is more important to me (and how easily I can soak it up).

    • http://www.expatlifecoach.com/blog John Falchetto

      Hi Benny,

First off, I wanted to congratulate you for the awesome piece you posted at Frank’s.

I agree, formatting and making it easy to read means a lot. Unless you are Griddy, I don’t know anyone else who can get away with 1200 words without boring me.

      • http://getbusylivingblog.com Benny Hsu

        Thank you very much John!

I appreciate that he asked me to do a guest post not long after meeting him. Another friend @smartincomeblog:disqus  recommended me and Frank trusts him. :)

  • http://www.jungleoflife.com/ Lance

    Ingrid,
The look and feel definitely gives me a feel of if I want to stick around.  If I see a very clean and professional design, I’m then ready to check out the content.  And while I like to think I’m at least somewhat literate, when words (and sentences) go beyond my comprehension, I’m usually gone at that point.  It’s also about making commenting easy and to some degree – if I see the author active in the comments, also.  And pictures.  I like pictures – they add a lot to the story (just like yours above!).

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hey Lance,

The look and feel are very important to me too – although you could have the best looking site but if your content is crap – then I’m out.

I also agree about the big words. If I’m gonna’ have to read a dissertation type thing where I need a dictionary to decipher everything – then I might not stay long. I said this before in my post on how do you find your blogger’s voice but I’ll say it again – it’s not about using the big words, it’s about making an impact with the simple ones.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts here. I’m sorry for my late reply but I’ve been offline a lot the last few days so I’m trying to catch up now with everyone who took the time to leave their pennies here. So thanks for your patience.

      Cheers

  • http://live-your-love.com/ Brankica | How to blog

I land on a blog usually by searching for a piece of info or after seeing a great title linked to it. So I know what to expect in small percentage. But no matter how important the info or good content is, if the design really sucks I won’t come back.

I love nicely designed blogs and I guess that is why I keep tweaking mine, lol. However if the blogger knows how to drag me into his content, I will forgive some small design mistakes, cause I know I have those too.
Content doesn’t have to be spectacular for me to read a blog, it just needs to be useful so I can learn something.

Of course the community part is also important. I kinda get confused if I see a great blog with no comments, makes me think that the blogger is a butt hole with no friends, lol. Missing ya, gal :)

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hola Sharpy,

I missed ya this week :(. So sorry for being online a bit less these days – things should go back to normal very soon my friend.

I’m with you about landing on new blogs while searching for something. And of course I do notice the design as well. But I will make exceptions and come back if the design is not so great – but only if the content is excellent – or at least that I’m learning something from it – that’s the most important thing to me – learn, inspire and be inspired. I realize that we all have different tastes and what I might like, you might hate and vice versa – but I guess there’s a median ground as well.

I’m with you in that I’m pretty anal about my blog look. I always want it to look good but there’s just certain things that I’m dependent on since I can’t code and stuff.

Oddly enough – there’s actually some great blogs out there which just don’t have the comments and communities yet for some reason. And I always wonder why and try to understand while sifting through them. Some are because they’re new – others because it’s one sided conversations in that the author never replies and the other commenters don’t talk with each other. Anyhow – all that I know that people like you and I (and many of our friends) are very lucky and blessed to have the communities and involvement that we do. I don’t take it for granted.

Thanks hun for adding your thoughts here. We have to catch up soon – seriously!!!
Hope all is well on your end.

Hi Princesses (you kind of had it coming with that picture) 😉
The first impression does mean everything. If your blog does not load within 3-5 sec. then I am on my way to another place again and might not ever return again. If the layout and the colors of your site scream: “I have bad taste” I am also gone and I will maybe miss out on some great blog posts. In the other hand if I feel welcome and it is easy to navigate at your place I might want to hang out for a while and properly come and visit again.
Well about the first thing I will notice at a woman at a bar? It is kind of the same as her blog: Design, her friends, if she is able to put some tasteful colors together. If I like what I see I will properly go right after her about page to learn more about her.

Thanks for effectively touching on everyone of the things I look for in a post/blog. I guess I could just say ditto, leave it at that, and post a superb drive-by comment. But just you wait because drive-bys ain’t happening on my watch. Not today sista.

I think the one item that stands above the rest… (ehem, it takes looks to get me to this point in the conversation), is do your stories speak about your experiences or are they simply generalities. I mean, let’s face it, there are nearly 7 Billion of us on this tiny rock, and the likelihood that we are experiencing similar lives and uncovering similar revelations are quite high. What I cannot stand is folks who regurgitate (or blog vomit as Joey Strawn might put it… I think) the same ideas without in any way, shape or form relating it to their own lives.

I may be guilty to talking too much in the 1st person; that I recognize. I also understand the importance of trying to “teach” one’s audience through a blog post; you know, kinda elicit a response out of them… a call to action, perhaps, but don’t preach at me. Don’t put yourself on a pedestal without first explaining to me who you are and why you have come to this profound conclusion. If I stumble across your site by accident and all I see is you preaching something I “NEED” to do without backing it up with your own experiences (good or bad) then I’ll likely not be returning anytime soon.

Overcoming fear is a great post topic, but if that is all you tell me without explaining how and when you did it, then you might as well have posted about the earth being round or kittens being cute because it ain’t news to me and it’s sure as steaming cow patties not going to captivate my attention.

    And…. scene.

      James
I think the accents of a blog matter.I am thinking of Mr. Brown’s Scottish posts. Come on you we all put on that Scottish voice in our heads when we read his posts.
When I read Humpday Humdinger #7 I did it with my best Southern twang. Which is probably not very Southern but I think you get my point.

The voice of each blogger is different and this brings an added personality beyond the design and the content.

This joins your idea of personal experience, the accent is part of what makes personal experiences in blogging unique.

      • http://www.lifeasanexperiment.com James D. Burrell II

        John,

You’re absolutely right. While I don’t know how many of the bloggers I read sound, I have picked up on the cadence with which they write. When I do know a person’s voice (i.e. Gini Dietrich & Ashley Ambirge) their voice sounds in my ears as I read, and it helps to truly appreciate and understand their post.

Although it is completely irrelevant to the world of business (especially Social Media), I’m currently reading Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain, and as a relentless follower of his TV Series “No Reservations”, I’m reading the book as if he were delivering it aloud, and it certainly serves to enhance the experience.

I’m sure your southern twang was spot on. Although most of my family hails from rural towns scattered across the southeastern United States, I was raised in the cultural (if only various American cultures) melting pot of Atlanta, so my accent possesses only a fraction of the syrup sounds of some of my family members, but rest assured, I’ll be doing a video post sometime in the near future to give everyone a taste of my mild Southern drawls.

        All the best!!
        Jamey

Hey Ingrid – per your post I’d say you have a leg up on most of us :)

Depending on the type of site I’m looking at, I have different criteria. For instance, if I’m reading a blog such as yours I’m expecting to see 0 banner ads for affiliate products, a clean look, easy to read font, engagement with the audience, and great content. When I’m looking at a “standard” Internet Marketing site I deal with all the affiliate ads. However, if ads take up more space than the content (your Times Square comment) I might go RSS if the content is good.

Content is still #1 for me though as I can use either an email or RSS subscription and never have to look at the site again unless I want to comment.

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hey Robert,
Crap – you’ve been hanging out here for a week – I’m so sorry for my late reply. I’m still trying to catch up with everyone’s comments here and reply in kind and I’ve been kinda late. I appreciate your patience my friend – I haven’t been online as much these last days but I’m  back :)!

You bring up a great point that I neglected to consider – that it depends on the type of site you’re looking at. And you’re right – I think most people would be surprised to start seeing a ton of banner ads on a blog such as this one. But I wouldn’t have minded having a couple affiliate products that use here one day.

As for content – at the end of the day – it’s what matters. I’d be lying if I said that the design would keep me from reading great content – sure, the design would help but if I’m learning something then why the heck not?! Plus as you said – that’s when RSS comes in very handy at times lol.

Thanks so much for your great additions here Robert. Good stuff Mr. Thailand :).
Hope all is well on your end.

Talk to you soon I hope.
      Cheers

I DEFINITELY judge by looks first, then brains. It doesn’t hurt to have a mutual friend who gives a thumbs up. I’ll go for three or four dates before I commit and go all the way (and subscribe). I wouldn’t mind getting flowers the next day but wordpress hasn’t figured that out yet. Someone needs to build the plug-in.

    • http://www.realityburst.com Eugene Farber

You ladies are so shallow :)

      • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

We are aren’t we? LOL 😉
But luckily for us – we have you men which take the word “shallow” right out of your vocabulary to even things out (this would be where my nice big sarcastic emoticon would go lol).

        Cheers Eugene

    • http://www.expatlifecoach.com/blog John Falchetto

Seriously looks first then brains? Lisa, I like the way you compare it to dating.
I guess the flowers are the emails/ DM and/or Skype calls after making a first contact through comments.
But yes plugin for flowers and also one for coffee delivery please :)

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

Ha! I love that we’re not shallow that way haha.
Hiya Lisa – my bad for keeping you waiting for a reply for a few days. I’ve been offline a bit and now getting back to respond to everyone.

I’m all over that flower plugin – but I really think it should have a plant and balloon option as well lol.

Hope your week is going well.
      Cheers

Hey, I can’t help it if I don’t have any screens on my windows; if you don’t mind the gnats it’s not too bad. And plus, I thought it would be a good idea to put the naked pictures of girls in there but the audience did seem a little creepy so I took them down. Good thing it’s the internet though and none of this stuff is permanent, huh?

I’m at the beach this wk (Gulf of Mexico in the F L A) so I’m spotty on my involvement but I did want to say hello.

I won last month didn’t I? It figures, just about the time I kick Marcus’ ass he gets all famous and acts like he doesn’t even care. That’s ok, I still did the happy dance……….

    Have a great day.

    • http://www.expatlifecoach.com/blog John Falchetto

Yes Bill you’re at the beach buddy, thanks for reminding us…Griddy did the same thing the other day also.
The weather actually sucks here right now and I have to wear a fleece…in June…in the South of France.

      Enjoy your beach time :)

      • http://billdorman.wordpress.com Bill Dorman

Fleece in June………yikes; you might get to wear it twice total in Fla………..:).

Heading home today (only 1 1/2 hr car ride) and looking over the beautiful beach one last time and then it’s back to the grind. I do think the week off was good and I’m excited about my prospects and opportunities for the rest of the year.

I’ll catch up w/ you later; have a good weekend.

      • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

I sure did :)! It seems @a76049f6a32a1e633a732b81bafb98c9:disqus and I are on the same wavelength these days haha.
I can’t believe what crappy weather you guys have been having over there – my friends are complaining too!

BTW – I just LOVE how you’ve joined so many conversations here John. That’s actually what I love most – when people feel at home here and go right ahead and talk with folks. Thank you so much for doing that :)))). And so sorry for the late replies on this post – I’m getting to them all – slowly but surely!

I am not the smartest kid on the block, and honestly I have to figure out how to add pictures to my blog posts.

However, that being said, I try to keep my posts short and easy to read. I want to use a larger font, but for some reason, WordPress will not allow me.

I try to keep to only one idea, and I try to reply to anyone who is kind enough to comment. I don’t get that many comments all the time, but the ones I do get I truly appreciate. They really do make such a difference to me.

I find blogs kind of randomly, and yes, if I comment and I get no reply, I am probably never going back. Especially if your blog is not inundated with comments. I feel if I am respectful that you can reply to me. If I see that you did not, then I move on.

Artwork is probably the thing that draws me in the least. The biggest blogging inspiration for me, Seth Godin does not use pictures for his blog.

I guess also with my subject matter sometimes I feel odd about using photos. Some of my posts can be fairly heavy.

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hey Nancy,

      How’s it going?
It’s always such a pleasure to see you here and I appreciate all that you do. So thanks :).

I admit that I’ve fallen short in leaving my thoughts over at your blog – which is kinda strange since I can’t name one post that I didn’t enjoy reading. Your honesty in sharing your feelings is so refreshing and each topic hits home somehow. So my apologies for slacking and not sharing – I will make that up asap.

As for replying to comments – I couldn’t agree with you more and I presume you know how I feel about that. I make it a point to respond to each person in a timely manner – but of course – there are times where I don’t make it on a time – and this would be one of them – so once again – sorry for keeping you waiting. As for keeping you posts short and easy to read – in all honesty, they could be twice or 3 times the length and I’d still be reading them. I love your style and topics.

Easy to read is the key – but when it comes to word length – I strongly believe that people can mix it up and write what they need to to say what they want to. If you prefer to keep it short or succinct that’s great – and if you can pull off a 1500 word post and keep your readers entertained or captivated till the end – that’s fine too. Just know your audience and you’ll know what and how much they can handle. I won’t bore you with that but I did write a guest post about word length over at Gini’s blog Spin Sucks back in January. It says exactly what I think about all that. If you’re interested – let me know and I’ll send you the link.

As for using images – I love to see images especially on the longer posts. It sorta of makes it lighter to read but then again – I say that because my posts are generally on the longish side lol. But I do think posts should have a small image to go along with the text regardless of the subject matter. But obviously – it won’t keep me from reading great content such as yours :).

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts on this Nancy.

You are such a wonderful part of this community and I’m glad we connected.

      Enjoy your weekend.
      Cheers

  • http://twitter.com/lifeforinstance Life, for instance

Well I DID miss Bring It last week – I enjoy these Griddy!
What attracts me to a blog: warm welcoming colors, inviting photos, friendly graphics, not too busy, as you said, sense of what the blog is about, photo of the blogger, easy font to read. I guess to say “one that gives me a good feeling” is too general and would be personal. Tough questions Griddy! We took a lot of time in choosing colors and stuff for our blog but I was lucky to work with a great designer who had a sense of how to make it look professional. When we combined that with my desire to make it warm and inviting, I think we made it work. What caught my eye here today was your graphic – you find great ones! I also enjoy your quotes and appreciate your photo and intro. Your personality shines through – that is probably the most important factor. As you said, your blog is your online home! You make people feel right at home here!Lori

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hey Lori,
Wow – what a great breakdown of things you look for when you land on a blog. And you’re right – you’ve made some fantastic points here my dear. The design, colors, layout and all those things are so important but it doesn’t change the fact that the content needs to be top notch as well.

I certainly don’t have the greatest looking site but I think it’s not too shabby either – but like you said – it makes people feel at home – and that’s exactly what I want and I’m glad that I’ve succeeded in doing that :).

Thanks so much for all you said about this blog Lori. I appreciate it a lot – but in all honesty – it’s all you guys that make it what it is. So thank YOU!

As for your blog – it does indeed have an incredibly inviting feel to it and makes us feel comfortable in sharing whatever it is that’s on our mind – no judgement, nothing…just being who we are and saying what we know or feel – and that’s awesome!

      Hope you’re enjoying your weekend.
      All the best

a combination of a)great content, b) nice design. i liked your analogy of the bar. “hey baby, has anyone ever told you have a nice, clean, uncluttered design? (wink wink). c) engagement. I know you’ll agree that this a huge reason why Gini does so well. You comment on her blog and you can’t help but feeling loved and like an insider.

Oh, and by the way Griddy, nice design. 😉

    • http://nittygriddy.com/ Ingrid Abboud

      Hey Ken,

Your combination of ingredients sounds like the perfect recipe my friend :).
Glad you liked the analogy – cause really…when you think about it – it’s true. You don’t know what someone’s like before you talk with them – and for you to talk to them – something of their’s must interest you.

And you’re 100% right about Gini – you always feel welcome in her house – as if you can share anything and just be yourself – as long as you’re respectful towards others of course.

Oh, and thanks for the design compliment hehe. It could look better but oh well…

Enjoy the rest of the week. And thanks for dropping by and sharing your thoughts.

      Cheers Mr. Mueller
